AudioMedia - March 2009 - (Page 52) PRODUCT SAMPLER Studio Monitors Audio Media buddies up with some of the industry's finest, as we dive into the suitably un-murky environment of studio monitoring. Acoustic Energy Pro has launched a new compact 5.1/2.1 monitoring system adding the ProSat and ProSub to the existing AE22 and AE1 Classic. The ProSat features a 130mm bass/mid driver (50W) and 25mm ring-radiator high frequency driver (25W) with incorporated amps. Active filters integrate the drivers at 2kHz using third order Bessel technology, while EQ’ing options include input sensitivity, low frequency extension, and high frequency control. Building upon its predecessor, the Truth B2030A, Behringer’s Truth B3030A studio reference monitor boasts built in 75W and 35W power amplifiers with deformation-resistant Kevlar coned 6.75-inch woofers and 2-inch velocity ribbon tweeter transducers. The active crossover network uses 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters and, when combined with Behringer’s wave guide technology, the company claims that these monitors deliver an impressive sweet spot. What do you rely on to present your hard work, day-in, day-out? Is it time to consider a step up in your monitoring, or even a step into the multi-channel scene? Read on, as we look at a selection of studio monitors that may just make the grade, delivering that delicious sound directly to your shimmering brain. Dynaudio Acoustics’ AIR 12 monitors come equipped with an advanced bass management system with selectable crossover points. The two-way near-field monitors come with DSP room adaption and are compatible with the AIR family, meaning workable solutions for stereo, 5.1, and above. The 8-inch woofer and 1.1-inch soft dome tweeter together deliver a frequency response of 37Hz-22kHz with individual monitors precisely matched within a ±0.2dB tolerance. www.acousticenergypro.com www.behringer.com www.dynaudioacoustics.com Joining Adam’s A-range of monitors is the new A5, a scaled down version of the A7, employing proprietary transducer technology (ART). Exclusive to the A5 is stereo-link, with additional I/O for the second stereo channel enabling the user to simultaneously operate both speakers with one controller. The A5 features built in direct drive amplifiers with a 2 x 25W output, compared with the 2 x 50W output of the A7s. Blue Sky’s Big Blue 5.1 system partners five three-way, tri-amplified 500W SAT 12 satellites – each featuring a 12-inch high-excursion hemispherical woofer with an ultra-low distortion four-inch hemispherical mid-range driver, plus a one-inch dual concentric diaphragm tweeter with integral waveguide – with one (or more) 1,000W SUB 15 Universal sub-woofers. Bass management is courtesy of Blue Sky’s Bass Management Controller (BMC), two of which can be combined to create a 10.2 surround system. The MA-15DBK Stereo Reference monitors from Edirol offer various handy inputs and outputs in a compact footprint for engineers with limited space at their disposal. Three independent source inputs (jack, CA line, and S/PDIF) allow referencing from any two line-level sources with independent volume control for both. When connected, the headphone socket overrides the speaker output, eliminating fiddly disconnections. www.adam-audio.com/studio www.abluesky.com www.edirol.com Audix’s easy to set up, self-powered Powerhouse range comprises the 20W PH3-S and 25W PH5-VS. The smaller PH3-S has a quoted frequency response of 100Hz to 20kHz, compared with 75Hz to 20kHz of its larger counterpart. The master speaker houses the amplifier and has two RCA audio inputs and a volume control. It connects to the slave speaker via a quarterinch cable, offering simple operation for both installation and mobile applications. www.audixusa.com Digidesign’s RM1 and RM2 near-field monitors combine Digidesign’s knowledge of digital audio with PMC’s expertise in cabinet craft and manufacture. The bi-amplified speakers have on-board digital signal processing engines that handle crossover frequency, speaker positioning and EQ settings, trim level, and Bass Port Emulation – the latter being a feature allowing the user to hear how the mix would sound on typical ported speakers. Event revealed its new upstart at NAMM this year in the form of Opal – a bi-amplified, ported near-field monitor designed for detailed dynamics and low distortion, and featuring rotatable tweeter/waveguide assemblies for vertical or horizontal mounting for the monitor. Delivering 750W of peak power and driven by drivers with 63mm neodymium motors which incorporate X-coil technology for improved speed and control, they provide a frequency response of 35Hz-22kHz. www.digidesign.com www.event1.com 52 AUDIO MEDIA MARCH 2009 http://www.acousticenergypro.com http://www.behringer.com http://www.dynaudioacoustics.com http://www.edirol.com http://www.abluesky.com http://www.adam-audio.com/studio http://www.digidesign.com http://www.event1.com http://www.audixusa.com
