As with the NEC, the CE Code Part 1 is a voluntary code that may be adopted and enforced by provincial and territorial regulatory authorities. The CE Code Part 1 is the Canadian equivalent of the NEC and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc® (IEEE®) National Electrical Safety Code® (NESC®) in the U.S. INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON ILLUMINATION (CIE) www.cie.co.at The International Commission on Illumination - also known as the CIE from its French title, the Commission Internationale de l´Eclairage - is devoted to worldwide cooperation and the exchange of information on all matters relating to the science and art of light and lighting, color and vision, and image technology. Construction Codes Construction codes are governmental regulations that deﬁne the construction requirements for all aspects of building construction, including: Location Size Materials Plumbing Electrical INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL Construction codes are deﬁned for a particular state, city, or jurisdiction. All persons working on a construction project, including AV installers, must follow the requirements deﬁned by construction codes. COMMISSION (IEC) www.iec.ch The IEC prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies — collectively known as “electrotechnology”. The IEC, formed in 1916 in The International Building Code (IBC) is a construction code developed by the International Code Council® (ICC®). The IBC is often used by local ofﬁcials when developing the building codes for a particular jurisdiction. INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) www.fcc.gov The FCC formed the National Television System Committee (NTSC) in 1940 to develop television-broadcasting standards. The rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are codiﬁed in Title 47 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Title 47, Part 76—Cable Television Service (47 CFR 76), addresses multichannel video and cable television (TV) service. The rules and regulations of Part 47 provide for the certiﬁcation of cable TV systems and for their operation in conformity with standards for TV broadcast signals, program exclusivity, cablecasting, access channels, and related matters. STANDARDIZATION (ISO) www.iso.org The International Organization for Standardization is the world’s largest developer and publisher of International Standards. ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 157 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system. ISO is a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. London, also manages conformity assessment schemes that certify that equipment, systems or components conform to its International Standards. With strong technical, scientiﬁc and cultural foundations, the CIE is an independent, non-proﬁt organization that serves member countries on a voluntary basis.
