Digital Video - January 2008 - (Page 6) LETTERS LOUD AND CLEAR To Jay Rose: I really enjoyed your latest article in DV magazine [“Audio Solutions,” December, page 54], I think it was the most important information presented in the issue. Everything mentioned was absolute gold, including the precaution to wouldbe Web researchers to cross check any and all claims of authority. Critical-thinking skills should be encouraged just as much as critical-listening skills. I had recently wanted to improve my split-editing chops for video documentaries and the resources you’ve consolidated for us will be invaluable. Mike Labay San Antonio Texas Via E-mail Jay’s column is also online on DV.com, with the important audio resources sites he suggested all hotlinked for your convenience. NOT SO FUNNY PHILLIP BADGER In our December issue’s cover story on The Sarah Silverman Program, the photo on page 32, featuring the show’s A-camera operator Ron Veto (above, on left) and director of photography Rhet Bear (on right), was improperly credited. This shot was, in fact, taken by the show’s chief lighting technician, Phillip Badger. We regret the error. “STORAGE” ISSUES In Ned Soltz’s article “Four Principles of Storage” [DV, Oct. 2007], he recommends using extra hard drives as a backup medium. I thought this was a fast, cost-effective method for large media files (compared to slow, small optical discs or tape). A co-worker of mine downplayed the idea stating that hard drives in storage will lock up over time; the HD motor and heads will seize up if kept in storage over the years. I’ve never heard this, but it sounds plausible. Is it a problem? Navarro Parker Rule Productions Via E-mail Soltz replies: Yes. There is a certain basis to the assertion that hard drive heads and motors could lock up over a period of years. I must say that I have not personal- ly experienced this problem. At a recent event sponsored by Avid, several of their engineers discussed this very topic. The recommendation to those who utilize hard drives as archival media was to spin the drives at least once every six months. So, despite my own personal experience to the contrary but in the light of what others have been saying, I continue to recommend hard drives as an economical backup solution. But, I would add that to be on the safe side, be certain to run those drive mechanisms periodically. DV welcomes your letters at letters@dv.com.
