BT-LH900A Panasonic $4,890 LCD portable monitor www.panasonic.com The ultra-sharp 8.4” LCD screen and wide range of interfaces makes this the high end of on-camera monitoring for focus, composition and accurate judgment of exposure. Hard to improve upon. This entry from JVC has become the hot field production monitor of late, with its glossy yet glare-resistant screen, convenient handle, excellent image and, of course, SDI. Twenty-inch model with SDI lists for $3,495 and the largest size goes for $4,695. Don’t forget JVC’s V9LIDM on-camera unit for $2,450 DT-V17L2DU JVC $3,000 LCD monitor Also offered are 20”and 24” and on-camera 9” models. www.jvc.com/pro $2,495 (plus i/o module) DT-V1710CGU JVC CRT HD Monitor. Some of us still like CRT monitors and JVC has one of the few remaining on the market. But HD-SDI will add $5,300 to the price, or more than twice the cost of the monitor itself. www.jvc.com/pro This is the best LCD monitor our editors have ever seen. We never could imagine such deep blacks, great contrast and depth of image on an LCD screen. HD-SDI adds another $5,600. We do not group this with other Sony LCD monitors. In a class by itself. BVM-L230 Sony $23,000 Tricaster LCD Monitor www.bssc.sel.sony.com $13,665 (+$5,600 for HD SDI) BVMA-20F1U Sony CRT Broadcast Monitor Its smaller sibling comes in at 14” for $6,245 plus i/o. Everything you could ever want from a CRT monitor with that richness of color that we CRT veterans so deeply miss. Still the standard. www.bssc.sel.sony.com Sony also offers this LCD series as a 20” with HDSDI for $4,300 and in 24” for $4200 plus $5,600 for SDI. Users take note. The LMD-2030W has HDMI interface for use with both capture cards as well as decks and camcorders equipped with HDMI. This is the ideal entry-level HD monitor for the HDV editor. The Marshall monitor is also marketed by Nebtek with a customized Panasonic battery back plate. Superb and durable on-camera monitor which at the price has become the choice for on-camera field monitoring. Combines price, durability and quality all-in-one package. Marshall produces a full line of LCD monitors for field and studio. We profiled this in an earlier Instant Expert. For the money, it represents a tremendous bargain for judging focus and composition. Less calibration capabilities than more expensive monitors. For many shooters of smaller HD cameras, this can do the job at a reasonable price. Designed, assembled and marketed by a camera operator who knows what shooters need, this unit can flip image for 35mm adapters, has a pan-zoom feature for critical focusing, is glare resistant, has a choice of battery mounts (Panasonic or Anton Bauer) and represents the absolute best choice for the money.
