And just as everyone has started to get the feel of all the new tools and innovations introduced during the annual Las Vegas confab last year (and added upon at IBC in Amsterdam), an entirely new crop of “toys” is on the verge of being unveiled. In the hope of helping DV readers navigate their way though the coming deluge, we’re planning a two-pronged approach to our NAB coverage: A preview piece in our April issue — outlining the trends that will run through the show in terms of cameras, storage, editing, et al — and a separate, all-NAB special publication that will itself be offered (with much fanfare, of course) at the event. The core of this “13th issue” of DV will be a company-by-company report on the manufacturers and developers offering our readership their latest and greatest. Of note is that Videography editor Cristina Clapp and myself will also be working with the NAB Daily during the show, helping to bring our respective perspectives to the event’s twice-daily official publication. Meanwhile, we and our team of contributors in attendance will be scoping out products to honor with our publications’ “best-in-show” awards. These awards will recognize the new tools that we feel will best serve our readers. DV’s honorees, given the Black Diamond Award (in tune with our diamond-based rating system), will be profiled in-depth in a subsequent issue and online. In the meantime, this issue will give you AWARD 08 something to chew on for the scant weeks before NAB — almost literally, as contributor Matt Jeppsen’s cover story details the making of the endlessly inventive Food Network show Iron Chef America. As you’ll read, the foodie favorite remains in standard-definition though the production is fully high-def capable. Yes, the producers have their reasons for this, but, more importantly, the situation serves as a symbol of the technological era we find ourselves in: one foot in the HD future, the other still in the SD past. But I suppose one foot must be in front of the other at some point for any forward progress to be made. Elsewhere in the issue, Roy Chapman, chairman of the Wedding and Event Videographer Association (WEVA), further detail an evolutionary phenomenon considered in our last few issues: the convergence of still photography and videography. (See “Two For One?,” page 8.) “We see the continuing “convergence” of digital technologies as a good thing,” Chapman describes, “as we feel it will open up more, not less, business opportunities for professional videographers.” It’ll be interesting to see how this progression plays out, and how new technologies introduced at NAB next month may foster the further convergence of certain production and post positions. The only thing that’s certain is change. David E. Williams, Editor dwilliams@nbmedia.com 4 dv march 2008 www.dv.com PUBLISHED BY NEWBAY MEDIA L.L.C. 810 Seventh Avenue, 27th Fl.
