The fixture cost me $15 and the supplies to wire it cost another $15. With tubes, I had a 4-foot fluorescent fixture for under $40. I purchased five sets of 48" T12 fluorescent tubes for this test, by happenstance — because that was what was available at my local home center — all manufactured by Philips. Fluorescent manufacturers use the lumen measurement of light, which is, in essence, a metric version of footcandles. For all intents and purposes, one footcandle is equal to 10 lux/lumens. So the fixtures above will provide an intensity of roughly 220-330 footcandles at a distance of one foot. Notice that the higher the CRI, the higher the cost of the tube. Kino Flo fixtures are not only higher CRI, they’re also higher wattage to provide far more illumination for film and video work. Pay special attention to the color of Amanda’s skin tone, and to the color of the gray behind her, in addition to how the light affects the yellow, magenta and cyan patches on the chart to the right. One of the biggest problems with fluorescent light is the inherent green tint, so watch for the greenish hue in the gray and in Amanda’s skin tone.
