It’s more than iMovie, but not Final Cut Pro. Adobe continues to make strides with upgrades to Premiere Pro, bringing native support for Sony XDCAM and Panasonic P2 formats, multiple projects panels with smart search and integration with hardware capture boards from Blackmagic Design and AJA Kona. Premiere was always noted for its strong titler and audio functions. Integration with other apps in Creative Suite Production Final Cut Express is an entry-level tool for professionals who just need certain basic editing functionalities. Still, it offers many of the features of FCP including HDV editing, AVCHD, open timeline format (mixing formats within one timeline), and FxPlug architecture for many added effects. FCE reads iMovie projects. It does not support any third party capture cards. FCP’s architecture allows plug-ins in native FxScript but also the new FxPlug architecture. Some support for some AE-format plug-ins remains. FCP 6 introduced Apple’s ProRes 422 and ProRes 422HQ for 10-bit quality with SD file sizes. FCP 6.0.3 adds support for Sony’s new XDCAM 4:2:2 format. Matrox products should be considered NLE’s because of their implementation of Premiere’s open architecture. Matrox adds significant realtime features to Premiere as well as a number of RT effects, which include color correction, keying, speed changing and ramping, 3-D DVE, and focus effects. Both allow monitoring via DVI sources. Multi-layer HD timelines are accelerated to RT. Media100 is available in a software-only version (Producer) and a full version (Suite). Suite allows access to Media100's AJA-OEM capture cards. Key features include integration of Boris Continuum Complete, real-time capabilities, RGB and YUV color correction in RT, support for ProRes 422 codecs as well as all current HD formats, and uprez/downrez/cross-conversions through the Kona-OEM boards. Vegas 8’s audio editor is about the most feature-laden audio tool within any NLE, including unlimited tracks, VST plug-in support, ASIO driver support, extensive mixing capabilities and Red Book CD mastering. On the video side, Vegas 8 speeds up the already existing multi-cam feature and adds additional formats, including Sony's XDCAM HD and EX. Also includes DVD authoring within application. Avid has thus far committed to the development of the Pinnacle line. Liquid’s uniqueness lies in its ability to edit just about any format, including compressed WMV and DivX. It can cut long-GOP HDV footage to frame accuracy and integrates DVD authoring.
