It’s just not an event that lends itself to single-perspective reportage. What’s fascinating to one person is often confounding or underwhelming to the next. That in mind, we’ve launched our multi-part review of NAB ’08 in this issue with a distillation of the blog that ran April 12-17 on DV.com. NAB coverage will continue in our June issue, which will offer in-depth reports on specific categories, including cameras, optics, editing systems and more. My favorite personal experience at this year’s NAB Show took place on the final day as I walked the halls one last time: presenting notifications to 20 diverse companies that one of their respective products was being honored with a best-in-show DV Black Diamond Award. The winners were chosen the night before by a select panel of engineers and production and post professionals who joined the magazine staff to nominate, argue about, and finally determine which items should be honored. The Black Diamond Awards are named after the diamondbased ratings system we use on our reviews. The primary judging criteria was that the item must (A) be new to the NAB Show and (B) serve the professionals who make up the DV magazine readership.
