The group included Los Angeles Council Led by Building Committe Chair Owen Roizman (far President Eric Garcetti, Councilman left), ASC members dig in. Tom LaBonge, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis, and Hollywood Chamber President and CEO Leron Gubler, as well as many active members of the ASC and friends of the organization. Purchased by the ASC from Silent Era star Conway Tearle in 1937 to be the organization’s permanent home, the Spanish-style mansion, situated at the corner of Orange and Franklin avenues, has gone through many previous face lifts over the decades. But, like many a fading beauty in this town, the Clubhouse was seriously starting to look its age. And this gloomy May afternoon’s groundbreaking ceremony, complete with ASC hardhats and gleaming shovels, was to mark the beginning of a much-anticipated, multi-million-dollar project to completely overhaul the structure. As explained by Building Committee Chair Owen Roizman, ASC: “The ASC was founded in 1919, when 15 cinematographers gathered for an informal meeting to share their experiences and ideas for advancing the art of telling stories with moving images. It was still the dawn of the motion picture industry. Other than some minor modifications, this building has remained virtually unchanged all of these years. “Our membership has now grown to over 300 active members who hail from some 20 different countries. We also have 150 associate members from ancillary sectors of the motion picture industry. We’ve always prided ourselves in our educational outreach to the entire film community and emerging filmmakers from all over the world. Visitors pass through these doors throughout the year, seeking the knowledge and experience of our members. “Obviously our needs have changed as our membership has grown. This planned renovation and expansion of our beloved Clubhouse will enable the ASC to increase and centralize many of our educational and technology activities. Our plans call for making a number of improvements to the building, but everyone should know that first and foremost, we are steadfastly committed to preserving the character and charm of this place we love so much.” So why is the restoration of the ASC Clubhouse important to anyone beyond their elite membership of top-flight directors of photography working in features, television and commercials? Because this relatively small building is one of the few places on the planet that is dedicated to the authors of the moving image, their craft and their history. That’s a history shared by everyone who creates moving images. And while membership in the ASC is an exclusive, by-invitation honor, everyone working in this field should feel that the Clubhouse is their home as well, as it celebrates the best, holds everyone to a higher standard and helps educate all who want to do better. I hope all DV readers will consider visiting the ASC Clubhouse sometime next year when it reopens, to experience some feeling for this shared history and to personally meet some of the great practitioners of that art.
