“give away” the filtration effect. Using gradients and diffusion filters, especially, you’re limited on what you can do with them. If you’re on a wide shot on which you want to use a diffusion filter and you need to zoom during the shot to a close-up — that diffusion filter is going to be accentuated considerably by the end of the shot and the effect will be multiplied, not necessarily in a good way. In addition, tilting the camera with a grad filter is generally impossible as the grad line moves and the filtration effect is revealed. a shot? Just move your position and range sliders until just the skin tones are selected and that’s the only area of the frame that will be affected by the digital filter. And it will automatically follow that selection throughout a moving shot without having to shape a custom mask or create keyframes. The software also gives you a lot more options than just the traditional Tiffen glass filters, including laboratory effects like skip-bleach, cross processing, flashing or two- or three-strip Technicolor looks, all of the GAM and THE NEW 325 DUAL-CHANNEL WIRELESS SYSTEM A new,compact, discrete dual-channel UHF receiver, with 188 user-selectable frequencies (566.125-589.875MHz), the 325UPR has new pivoting high-gain antennas, stereo output, digital LCD displays with multi-function readout, and separate Power On/Off switches for each channel. Zooms aren’t affected the same way with a digital filter because you’re not magnifying a smaller portion of the filter (thereby accentuating the effect), so you don’t have the same deleterious effects. With grads, you can keyframe and animate them to adjust as the camera moves to maintain the perfect filter position without giving away the fact that you’ve integrated a grad. Additionally, as Tiffen has now acquired and integrated my favorite plug-in filter set — the Digital Film Tools 55mm suite — Tiffen’s Dfx software incorporates the same kind of dynamic masking technique, where you select the range and position of the image to be affected and it will create its own automatic custom traveling matte. The Photoshop CS3 plug-in was a little surprising in how it works. When you select the Dfx v1.0 filter suite from your Photoshop filter list, it opens a new window where you can select the filter and control all of your attributes. Once you select your filter and make your adjustments, you click “done” and the stand-alone window closes, Photoshop renders the filter and you see the result in Photoshop again. You can only apply one filter at a time in the standalone window, which means the next Dfx filter you apply will send you back into the standalone window, again. That felt clumsy, until I got used to the workflow, and it really isn’t much different than the Photoshop Filter Gallery function. It is just a little different interface.
