WEB VIDEO YOUTUBE OPENS SCREENING ROOM FOR INDEPENDENT FILMS L aunched in June, the YouTube Screening Room (www.youtube.com/ ytscreeningroom) offers a platform for films from around the world to find new and broader audiences. Every other week, users find four new films featured in the YouTube Screening Room, all distributed with the permission and involvement of the filmmakers. While the majority of these films have played at international film festivals, YouTube is also featuring films that have never before screened for wide audiences. “Every year, tens of thousands of films are produced, but many of them never get a chance to be seen by a wide audience,” explains Sara Pollack, YouTube’s film and animation manager. “The YouTube Screening Room will connect films and audiences in the world’s largest theater, providing filmmakers with a showcase, but also helping [users] find new high-quality content.” Filmmakers featured in the Screening Room can elect to have a “Buy Now” option that allows viewers to buy DVDs or digital copies. Also, the filmmaker receives a share of ad revenue generated from views of their video.
