Digital Video - September 2008 - (Page 30) TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY FLASH MEDIA SERVER 3 www.adobefms3.com Until recently, a valid Flash question was, “Why do I need a dedicated Flash server?” The usual answer was that your expectation level was set for progressively downloaded desktop video performance, not television on your laptop, desktop or big-screen smartphone. For $1,000, Adobe Flash Media Streaming Server 3 offers dramatically improved performance, more secure streaming, live streaming enhancements, support for industry-standard H.264 and HE-AAC, and streaming delivery to mobile phones with Adobe Flash Lite 3 and Adobe Media Player software, not to mention live video support, logging and bandwidth detection. For secure content delivery, you can invest a few more thou- sand dollars on the Flash Media Interactive Server, which supplies RTMPE, an enhanced version of Adobe’s Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP), with higher performance and 128-bit encryption to help secure streamed media and communication. A new verification feature protects SWF files from being reused, modified or hosted in unauthorized locations. The new plug-in architecture can also be used to create custom authorization adapters, such as validation with an external LDAP server. The competition (Microsoft, Apple — and don’t forget the VLC server) all cost less and make similar claims from slightly different angles, but if you’re already invested in Flash media production, it seems a small price to pay considering the durability of the overall platform. I expect to learn much more about this at the Flashforward Conference in San Francisco on August 20. DV MY STUDIO JASON YANUZZI FACILITY: SONICPOOL T he “Lake Superior” room at Hollywood, California-based post house SonicPool is operated under the watchful eye of lead online editor and colorist Jason Yanuzzi, who recently completed TV spots for Ford and Vizio, as well as the reality series Stingers. A veteran of CNBC TV, where he edited a variety of TV programs and was also responsible for color correction, video QC and the editing of various segments, reporter packages and teases from raw footage, Yanuzzi says, “The Superior room is just fantastic, and it’s incredibly helpful to have such a large projection system that is so capable of identifying minute errors that would be easy to miss on a smaller monitor.” Superior boasts a Sony SXRD HD projection system with a 16' screen, an Avid DS Nitris/Symphony dual-boot system with true 4:4:4 technology, 5.1 surround sound monitoring, 15TB of storage, and Panasonic D5 and Sony HDCAM SR HD tape decks. In keeping with SonicPool's tradition for suites that have aquatic or nautical names, Superior offers Avid DS-HD services for 2K, 4K and HD finishing. Company owners John Frost and Patrick Bird reported, “Many of our clients were beginning the transition from SD dv september 2008 1 AVID DS NITRIS/ SYMPHONY DUAL-BOOT SYSTEM With true 4:4:4 technology. 2 MARTINSOUND MULTIMAX EX MONITORING Tri-level sync and local Fibre Channel storage. 3 WACOM TABLET AND MOUSE 4 VIDEOTEK VTM4100 SCOPE Offers on-screen monitoring. to HD, so we felt it was time to create the Superior HD suite and equip it with the best technology possible.” SonicPool projects finished in Superior include the features Ligiea (produced by Jeff Most), Weather Girl (directed by Blayne Weaver) and Lonely Street (written and directed by Peter Ettiger), as well as the thriller Chain Letter (involving the urban myth) and The Hustle (a comedy about con men targeting a church), which were both written and directed by Deon Taylor.
