Digital Video - September 2007 - (Page 36) Flight Plan Air travel with your equipment can turn into a bumpy ride. BY NED SOLTZ I am writing this sitting in a hotel room in Jerusalem. I last saw my checked baggage 10 days ago. It’s stuck in London, I presume, in the massive backup that British Airways has suffered in interline transfers to its international Terminal 4. My luggage contains the usual clothing items— and two Sennheiser microphones, a DVMultiRig, all of my battery chargers, a Tekkeon battery, cables, brackets, lighting, and a digital audio recorder. I fortunately carried on my Panasonic HVX200, MacBook Pro, Firestore and two hard drives. In this age of increased security, frequent delays, stricter carry-on rules and more rigid enforcement of overweight fees, flying with equipment becomes even more difficult. Here are some suggestions for traveling with your equipment as well as alternatives to checking your gear. The first guideline—one of which I was even aware when I checked my gear—is don’t check anything that you are not prepared to lose. Lost, delayed and misplaced luggage rates have skyrocketed worldwide. Delays are costly and frustrating, and often ruin shoots. Whenever practical, carry your camera onboard. Most likely, your camera is the most expensive and fragile piece of equipment in your kit. Be certain, though, to verify carry-on limits of your carrier, as well as the countries through which you may be flying. Pay attention to the types of aircraft you’ll be using as well. Many smaller, regional planes cannot accommodate an otherwise airline-compliant carryon, and the agent may make you check it at the gate. I know of a shooter who relinquished two Betacams at the gate and received many more than two pieces at her destination. Current guidelines in the U.S. allow for one carry-on with total dimensions not exceeding 45” (the sum of the length, width and height; e.g., a 22” x 14” x 9” case), plus one “personal item” (such a purse or laptop). If you suspect that you might be forced to check your camera, make certain it is packed in a suitable shipping container. I am quite partial to cases made by Pelican (www.casesbypelican.com)—the Pelican 1510 offers the most space. 34 DV SEPTEMBER 2007 «« http://www.casesbypelican.com
