BY FRANK CAPRIA above: Adobe After Effects users will be instantly familiar with the Premiere Pro interface. dobe, Apple and Avid recently released significant upgrades to their nonlinear editing packages. Most notable is Adobe’s reentry into the Mac NLE market. Apple’s Final Cut Studio 2 suite has also gained a lot of attention with its addition of Color and significant upgrades to Motion and Compressor. Avid has flown somewhat under the radar with its new Xpress Pro 5.7, but this update brings Avid’s NLEs to Intel Macs. Beyond the “big three” are several notable systems such as those from Autodesk and Quantel, on the higher end of the price spectrum, as well as desktop editors like Sony’s Vegas and Grass Valley’s Edius. However, this article focuses on NLE systems that run A on off-the-shelf PCs or Macs and offer a complete suite of software tools beyond the NLE itself. When the Adobe, Apple and Avid updates were announced earlier this year, video professionals began taking stock their postproduction needs— whether they were buying for the first time, considering an upgrade, or weighing the cost and benefits of switching platforms. Though choosing an NLE is no longer the high-stakes activity it was 5 or 10 years ago, outfitting an editing suite remains a several thousand-dollar investment. Let’s be clear from the start.
