AFM also partners with the American Film Institute’s AFI FEST, running concurrently in Los Angeles (see below). Features international competitions of new films from emerging filmmakers, as well as global showcases of the latest work from film masters and nightly red-carpet premieres. This year’s program was still TBA at press time. AFI FEST 2006 showcased 111 features and 36 shorts, both a mix of narratives and docs. FEES Industry badges start at $250. AFM also hosts free “Public Previews” of films for all entertainment industry members and Santa Monica residents. Users can open an account in minutes, setting up companies and projects that clients log into using their email address. Clients can comment on and approve QuickTime clips, as well as trade Windows Media files with the account holder—all on a secure Web page. Optimized for common browsers, the site design remains free of clutter. Optional e-mails alert project members when new clips and files are available. Xprove offers four tiers— Free, Lite, Standard and Pro— which vary in storage and bandwidth limits, as well as the number of active projects allowed. SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL Park City, Utah, Jan. 17-25, ’08 www.slamdance.com/ filmmaker/ Showcasing the work of “the most talented emerging filmmakers,” just up the street from Sundance’s media circus The 2008 program will include competitions for features and docs, as well as special screenings, animated shorts, gallery shorts, “anarchy” shorts screened online and “$99 specials” (produced in 99 days for $99). Spanning narrative and documentary features and shorts, with animated and experimental shorts and music videos to boot. The 2007 festival hosted 240 films.
