Digital Video - October 2007 - (Page 25) SCORE REDROCK MICRO unit in towards the lens, binding it up and stressing the lens mount. Leaving a little extra space between the gears before we locked it down alleviated that concern. A rotating metal marking indicator can be positioned anywhere around the marking ring with an adjustment knob. The focus dial has a rubberized texture that provides plenty of friction, and the face of the dial features a standard accessory port for whips or a speed crank. Overall, the Petroff Mini is equally at home driving 35mm cinema PL and 35mm still lenses. (Thanks to Petroff authorized reseller Ste-Man, Inc., for providing our review demo unit.) offering plenty of grip for complicated pulls. The face of the dial features a standard accessory port for whips or a speed crank. Redrock includes three plastic lens gears in their basic bundle, each of which employs a toolless design that works well with a variety of 35mm still camera lenses. We found the Redrock Micro unit to be a reliable performer, and while it doesn’t offer as many features as some other units, the minimal amount of gear play at this price point was most impressive. DV PROS: Quality construction and minimal gear play at an attractive price. Can be reverse-mounted without removing the unit base from rods. CONS: Fixed metal marking indicator cannot be rotated. Focus gear is fixed on one side of the gearbox. BOTTOM LINE: A solid performer that delivers all the basics in style, and at a very reasonable price point. MSRP: $645 CONTACT: www.redrockmicro.com REDROCK MICRO This unit attaches to standard 15mm rods and locks in place with two side-mounted knobs. A center knob locks horizontal slide. You can unscrew that knob and mount the follow focus on the opposing side of the camera without unlocking the base. The gearbox is dampened, making focus pulls smooth and noiseless. We found very little slop in the gearbox—between 1.5mm and 2mm of play in the gears. The extra-wide 0.8/32 pitch focus gear is fixed to one side of the gearbox, which may be a concern during use with some unique configurations. Gears can be replaced with optional pitch ratios. The focus dial features a metal surface with hundreds of machined grooves, THERE’S AN AZDEN SHOTGUN MIC DESIGNED TO IMPROVE YOUR AUDIO QUALITY SGM-1000 A phantom powered shotgun mic with new high-performance microphone element that features: phantom 12-48V or 1.5V AA battery • wide frequency response • highly directional pick-up pattern • high sensitivity/low noise • shockmount holder with new longer integrated shoe mount • XLR output • switchable low cut filter • On/Off power switch • standard foam windscreen • length - 310mm (12.5").
