Digital Video - October 2008 - (Page 38) DV 101 different from site to site. Before we start hosting our own video in our own player on the official Cryptique site, Revver will be our main video source. Hosting is a significant concern on many fronts. First, you need to find a Web server that can provide reliable, fast service for all visitors. For video playback, you need a server with sufficient disk space and with sufficient bandwidth. What many people don’t know is that Web hosts charge you separately for the amount of space you need (like a virtual hard drive) and then for the bandwidth used. If you have a 10MB file on your site and one person views that file, that is 10MB of bandwidth. But if 100 people view that file, that’s 1,000MB of bandwidth. If you are hosting your own videos and they start to become popular, you’re either going to have exorbitant over-bandwidth usage fees or your server will shut down outside access to your site after a certain bandwidth allotment for the month. In January of 2002, when my short film “Paranoid,” an adaptation of a poem by Stephen King, premiered online, we had more than 2,000 downloads in one day. In today’s terms, that’s not so significant, but in 2002 with a 75MB file, it was insane. The only way to solve the issue back then, as the popularity of the short rose, was to have multiple server accounts and rotate the link from one server to the next as the bandwidth neared its cap with each account. Today, life is a lot easier and bandwidth is not only cheaper and more plentiful, but compression is better and file sizes are generally smaller. As this project continues, I’ll update our progress and additional discoveries on my DV101 Blog at DV.com. DV The basic shooting setup for Cryptique, with a second cam for behind-the-scenes footage. I see pros and cons to each. I always find that good compression versus file size takes trial and error. What worked for me last time — even with a similar project from the same media source — won’t necessarily work this time. I also know that these episodes will be primarily uploaded to third-party video hosting sites such as YouTube and Revver. As a result, they will be re-compressed into that site’s particular flavor. It was Eric Tozzi, one of the creators of the Dirty Bomb Diary Web series (see DV July, ‘08), who first pointed out to me the superior video quality of Revver compared to other sites. After investigating, I’ve found his assessment to be absolutely true. Most sites are using Flash as a media player, but the special-sauce, if you will, of compression is ADVERTISEMENT PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT AUDIO-TECHNICA BP4025 X/Y STEREO FIELD RECORDING MICROPHONE Audio-Technica’s new stereo condenser introduces a space-saving capsule design.
