Digital Video - October 2008 - (Page 4) PREROLL BY DAVID E. WILLIAMS IN DEEP (DV) EXPO DV .COM VOLUME 16 NUMBER 10 OCTOBER 2008 P lotting out the particulars of next month’s DV Expo (November 4-6 at the Los Angeles Convention Center; see page 25 for more details or just go to www.dvexpo.com) has brought to light a number of issues not only about the fine art of conference programming but the very nature of such events. Specifically, given the immediate availability of information on the Internet, can such happenings remain relevant? Without trying to sound self-serving, the clear answer is a resounding YES. The Internet is a great research tool for specs, pricing, raw information and opinion, but it also delivers an intangible experience that’s a flimsy replacement for the real world. You can imagine the size and shape of a camera based on a manufacturer’s product report and images, but what does it really feel like in your hands? A resolution test may inform you on the light transmission capabilities of a new lens, but how does it look in terms of sharpness and contrast to your eye? We can pour over instruction manuals in a self-teaching frenzy, and solicit plenty of advice from various online forums, but professional instruction from seasoned educators is well worth your time, especially if you’re just starting out. While today’s production and post may be all-digital endeavors, they also rely on a series of critical tactile — analog — interfaces with the real, physical world, and a trade show like DV Expo is your best opportunity to experience the new tools and techniques you need before buying in — as well as to personally interface with that manufacturer who may help improve — or save — your next project. We have also worked hard this year to expand DV Expo well beyond being “just another trade show” by partnering with a diverse collection of our industry’s more important organizations. They include the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group, the Digital Cinema Society and the LA RED User Group. Each will not only have representatives at the show (as would be expected), but will hold their respective monthly meetings at DV Expo (FREE of charge to attendees), bringing together their unique memberships and imparting the info and contacts you need to succeed. Finally, we have done our best to make DV Expo an event for you, the reader of this magazine. We don’t pretend that DV Expo is like the NAB Show in Las Vegas or IBC in Amsterdam — the two biggest production and post events on the planet — but instead our even offesr focus. We know that DV readers are more interested in documentary production than in radio towers. We know that portable lighting kits are a vital component of your production package, but an ENG-style production truck (no matter how capable) is not. We know that operating a new pedestal-style camera with an astonishingly sharp, autofocus HD lens is a blast, but chances are that you won’t be using one on your next project. And while it’s easy to be caught up in the disco-like razzledazzle of the seemingly impossible postproduction miracles of tomorrow offered by top-flight software developers, they may not be the right tools for completing the jobs you’ve lined up today. No, I can’t say everything offered at DV Expo will be right for everyone, but this is the show for us, and I look forward to meeting you there. David E.
