Digital Video - November 2007 - (Page 11) SHORTS RED: THE WAIT IS OVER DV UPDATE APPLE INTEGRATION While Apple is still basking in the afterglow of its Final Cut Studio 2 release at NAB, Apple arrived in Amsterdam with some key announcements that help more fully integrate its revised NLE suite with other companies’ latest offerings. In addition to the aforementioned support for XDCAM, Apple demo spokesman Paul Saccone noted how FCP2 was designed to be “scalable around the software, allowing one to work within anything from a capable laptop environment to a broadcastquality suite.” Saccone added that such users as Fox Sports and partners as the communications tech giant Harris are helping to better migrate FCP 2 into the latter realm, further broadening Apple’s penetration into the NLE market. Other imminent upgrades to Final Cut include support for the European Union’s 50p HDTV standard, JVC’s 50p GY-HD200 and GYHD250 cameras and devices and a further relationship with RED (allowing one to edit within the RED codec for a DI-to- ake Forest, Calif.-based RED Digital Cinema shipped the first 25 production units of its longanticipated RED ONE camera to customers on Aug. 31, with a second batch following on Sept. 7. Working RED ONE cameras were on display in the RED booth, with the convention also hosting 4K screenings of Crossing the Line and seminars on the RED workflow. Just before IBC, RED founder Jim Jannard noted in a statement on the company’s user forum that the REDCINE software, which converts the RED camera footage into a format readable by NLE systems, “is being rebuilt and won’t release for a week or two.” In the meantime, Jannard said, “RED Alert! will be the mini-app of choice.
