BY TERENCE KEEGAN hile marking the start to studios’ Oscar-buzzbuilding campaigns for the likes of Sean Penn (Into the Wild) and Paul Haggis (In the Valley of Elah), the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), held Sept. 6-15, also hosted several notable digital premieres from acclaimed directors. Octagenarian director Sidney Lumet, renowned for films like 1957’s 12 Angry Men and 1975’s Dog Day Afternoon, continued working in HD for his latest feature, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney and Marisa Tomei, with cinematography by Ron Fortunato, ASC). The heist thriller, picked W Mike Figueroa, a real-life US Army Reserve serviceman, plays Sgt. Jim Ross in Brian De Palma’s digital Iraq war drama, Redacted. up for U.S. distribution by THINKFilm, sees a limited theatrical opening Oct. 26. Also making its North American debut at Toronto was Brian De Palma’s Redacted (shot by Jonathon Cliff), a dramatic feature that employs documentary shooting techniques to depict Iraq war soldiers’ stories. The week before TIFF, De Palma won Best Director honors for Redacted at the Venice Film Festival; the feature will see release next year by Mark Cuban’s Magnolia Pictures. Nearly a third of the festival’s 350 films received digital presentations, with Christie, a leading manufacturer of digital cinema projectors (based in Ontario), supplying ten of its machines for over 100 public, press and industry HD screenings. http://fullsail.com http://fullsail.com
