F or nearly 60 years, 3D videos have been synonymous with kitschy promotions of films at movie theaters. But a new technology platform from Philips promises to ditch the paper-spex stigma of 3D entirely, making it easy to add a dimension to 2D video footage and beam the content to screens using existing delivery infrastructure. With Philips 3D Solutions’ forthcoming BlueBox—a service suite of advanced 3D content creation tools that converts 2D video to 3D content— R&D Using Philips’ BlueBox, the 3D “depth” map created on the key frame will automatically translate to the remaining part of the video scene. producers will be able to create highquality 3D content much more quickly and at lower cost than ever before. Designed for ease of use within a producer’s own facilities, the BlueBox toolset automates a large part of the conversion work with no compromise in quality standards. The first major 3D content creation service on the BlueBox, the WOWvx Spacer, will provide for semi-automatic offline conversion of existing 2D video content to the 2D-plus-Depth format, employed in Philips WOWvx 3D Displays now available for professional video installations (like advertising displays and signage in hotels and casinos). Perhaps the best part about 2Dplus-Depth is that its 3D effect can be perceived with the naked eye. Philips 3D has an “end of Q3 2007” target for commercial release of the BlueBox.
