You didn’t actually drive all the way downtown to read a magazine, did you? You should be sitting in on a conference session, checking out some gear and software on the show floor or making contacts that will pay off over the 2 SEE PAGE 3o next year. (And with the state of the econdvexpo.c omy, we can all use some help.) So put the magazine back in your bag (after checking out the special DV Expo edition of our “Tools & Technology” section, beginning on page 32) and get to it. There is no time to waste. The show only lasts for three days. When you get done, come back and read the rest of the issue. Okay, now that they’re gone. Over the past weeks, the Internet has been abuzz with videographers chattering about two new digital SLR still cameras from Canon and Nikon — respectively, the EOS 5D Mark II and the D90. As still photographers — particularly newspaper shooters — have been increasingly turning to HD video cams to maximize their newsgathering potential, video specialists may soon start relying on these stills units to capture moving images. It’s a logical progression, given that these high-end DSLRs can also record high-quality video: 720p (1280 x 720) by the D90 in “DMovie” mode and 1920 x 1080 at 30fps as well as 4:3 standard TV quality (SD) video capture at 640 x 480 and 30fps by the EOS 5D Mark II. Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II. While the experts can argue about the unique qualities of each of these hybrid cameras — including their cost-effectiveness and shortcomings — the Canon and Nikon units mark a new era of digital imaging, and (as our intrepidly opinionated Stefan Sargent noted in his Web-exclusive “Production Notes” column on DV.com), the start of a “big squeeze” on the industry players already vying for dominance in the HD video arena. What does it all mean for videographers? That doing your homework before buying a camera — which includes attending shows like DV Expo — has become ever-more important if you’re going to stay competitive. David E.
