Digital Video - December 2008 - (Page 41) JUMPS DV DV 101 (continued from page 38) COREL (continued from page 17) can focus on the new focal point (in this case, requiring a macro focus lens to focus on the image projected mere inches in front of the lens) and will only work on a fixed focal length. This makes the Red Eye adapter a non-zoom-through, whereas the 16x9 adapters will work for the entire focal range of a zoom lens. It may seem like an odd technique to have a wide-angle adapter and then zoom through it, but there will be times when you’ll need to recompose an image quickly, and retaining your full range of zoom (albeit shortened by the adapter’s conversion factor) is very handy. Afocal adapters are larger and considerably heavier than focal adapters. The 16x9 0.75x adapter adds nearly 1.5 lb. to the lens, which may not seem like much until you’re going handheld for an extended period of time. Adapters will, in addition to altering the focal length, alter the depth of field of your shot. As you are converting to a wider angle of view, if you maintain the same camera position, aperture and distance to your subject, you will have an increased depth of field, so that’s something to be aware of. In addition, with the wider view and larger optics, many accessories — matte boxes, lens shades, etc. — will no longer fit on the lens, or may actually be seen in the shot. In addition to 16x9 and Red Eye, Tiffen, Century Optics and others also manufacture high-quality adapters. Prices range from $400 to $800, depending on the conversion factor and manufacturing. DV Performance seemed a little better there, but it still wasn’t great. (I also ruled out the portable hard drive by copying the media to the internal hard drive and relinking it, to no avail.) Thankfully, using the Multi-Trim method sped things up greatly, and I was able to get a reasonable frame rate during Timeline editing by tweaking some of the project settings manually. Corel informs me that this is a new issue they are working to address with a future software update, but the good news is that the same footage captured in SD worked like a charm. STRONG OUTPUT VideoStudio Pro X2 is a master when it comes to final output of your project. Clicking the Share tab brings up a host of output options, including Blu-ray output, AVCHD conversion, the aforementioned mobile device support and YouTube direct upload, as well as standard DVD creation. With a few clicks, I was able to port my edited 37-minute vacation video to DVD, complete with animated menus and a lot of customization. Encoding seemed on par with competing packages, and there was access to plenty of advanced settings, should you need them. Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 roars onto the sub-$100 NLE scene as a real challenger for Sony Vegas and other competing suites. Available in both basic and pro versions, I’ve only scratched the surface of everything that Corel has done to upgrade VideoStudio, but suffice it to say that this is a suite that’s well worth a look.
