EQ Magazine - June 2008 - (Page 42) POWER APP ALLEY BY CRAIG ANDERTON CAKEWALK PROJECT5 Time-stretch Groove Matrix clips to match tempo OBJECTIVE: Allow clips of different tempos to work together when imported into Project5’s Groove Matrix. BACKGROUND: Project5’s Groove Matrix is an Ableton Live-like feature that allows triggering a clip or group of clips, with the launch times quantized to a rhythmic value you specify (e.g., measure boundaries). However, if you want to combine clips with different native tempos, you first need to set their time-stretch attributes within Project5. STEPS 1. Drag a clip from the browser (revealed when you click on the Explore button) into a Groove Matrix cell. 2. Right-click on the clip, and select Play in Time with Song. Make sure One-Shot is not selected. 3. Assuming the clip is still selected (if not, click on it), click on the Editor button. The clip waveform appears in the Editor window. 4. Add time-slice markers (shown by markers with green triangular heads) at a particular rhythmic value by clicking on the right/left arrow buttons in the Slice Division field until the field displays the desired value. 5. Slices work best if they’re lined up with transients. If necessary, turn off Snap to Grid, click on a slice marker head that isn’t lined up properly, and drag it to just before a transient begins. Repeat for other slice markers that need adjustment. 6. To add a slice marker, double-click in the area just above the waveform, at the place where you want the marker to appear. To remove an unneeded marker, right-click on it. 7. Click on the clip name, and verify that the slicing works as desired—see Tips for additional information. TIPS ■ If you hear “flamming” when stretching a clip, then you probably need to either add a marker at a transient, or move a marker to coincide with a transient. ■ If part of a clip seems to speed up, it definitely needs another transient marker to indicate where a beat should fall. ■ You can draw in pitch changes for individual slices. Select “Slice: Pitch” (to the right of the Automation Tool button), choose the Automation Tool (pencil), then draw the pitch automation curve directly on the waveform. This is definitely a cool effect! 42 EQ JUNE 2008 www.eqmag.com http://www.eqmag.com
