EQ Magazine - June 2008 - (Page 6) SOUNDING BOARD SFZ FOR LIFE It was really good to see an article on SFZ format files [“Key Issues: Managing Multisamples with SFZ” — 04/08]; I think that EQ may be the first magazine to recognize their importance. I have used them for years to collaborate and don’t know why they’re not more commonly used. However, there is one advantage your article did not mention: If you collaborate with someone who knows SFZ, you can collaborate on the instrument itself along with the music. For example, if your friend thinks an instrument would sound better with an attack time or another oscillator, those changes can be made and the new instrument sent to you. Normally you can do this only if you both have the same instruments, so I think this is a big feature that your readers should know about. Alain Menard (via email) A DELETED SCENE FROM HIGH FIDELITY While I’m sure by now that someone has caught this little error in the Lo-Fi Recording article [“Lo-Fi Recording: How to Trash Your Tracks” — 03/08], I thought I should point out that the song “Soul Suckin’ Jerk” is from Beck’s album Mellow Gold. “Loser” isn’t an album; it’s just the first single off that particular album. Craig Miner (via email) PRO TOOLS FIX FOR LEOPARD CATS Within a few days of the OS being released, I found a way to run Pro Tools 7.0/7.4LE under Leopard. I would love to share it with your readers. The deal is quite simple: Apple’s MIDI Core & Core Audio drivers do their own thing and do not need Digi’s drivers. Here’s how you remove them: ■ Go to your main hard drive. Select your Library folder, go to your Audio folder and then go to your MIDI Drivers folder. ■ Remove the “DigiDioMidiDriver.plugin” and the “DigidesignFireWireMIDI.plugin” (if you’ve installed Reason, you must also remove the DigiRewire.plugin). Place them in your Documents folder. ■ Restart your computer and enjoy yourself. LaMar Mitchell (via email) ANALOG AND DIGITAL? Is the print version of EQ no longer available? I notice there is a digital version of it available now. Will the back issues of the past two years be available online as well? Adhab (via email) agree with the message of the article. In fact, my business has developed a brand new division focused solely on these elements at our studio. We have a wide range of clients recording here, from major label to indie artists, including Dave Matthews, Gomez, and the Dixie Hummingbirds. While the major label clients are great, the majority of our work comes from indie acts. The indie artists always get excited about the recording process, but then get bummed out when they find out just how much work it is to promote and sell a record. They would ask us for advice, and we would always gladly give it to them. One day, we just decided to make it formal and develop The UnLabel, with the goal of making major label services available to any band. No contracts, no red tape, just help. We do all of the things mentioned in the article, and preach to indie artists that the record deal is a thing of the past . . . and that they can do it on their own with just a bit of help. We have been at it for about a year now, and we have had a steady stream of business and some really great success stories. In fact, it has been an extra draw for artists to come to the studio, as we are now a “one-stopshop” for artists. We like to say that all they have to do is walk in with some songs in their head, and we will take care of the rest. They can walk in with nothing, and leave with everything necessary to succeed. Matt Harper responds: You are right that “Soul Suckin’ Jerk” is on Mellow Gold, and that Mellow Gold also houses Beck’s break-out hit “Loser.” And you are right in that yours is not the first letter we’ve received pointing out this perceived editorial error. However (and I’m putting on my recordnerd-liner-note-reading glasses as I type this, while imploring you not to think me an a**), Beck also released a single for “Loser” that included a version of “Soul Suckin’ Jerk” which is markedly different from the version on Mellow Gold (i.e., the version on the “Loser” single is nearly two minutes longer). I suggest any Beck fan check this release out (although it may be a bit hard to track down) as it has some real hard-to-find gems on it—namely, “Corvette Bummer,” “Alcohol,” and “Fume.” Matt Harper responds: The print version of EQ is still available; we are just offering some choice issues as digital versions. If you would like to check out the latest version of the digital EQ, you can access it via the following link: www.nxtbook.com/ nxtbooks/newbay/eq 200804. For all you analog aficionados, EQ is available on the newsstand (and doing very well, thank you!), and you can subscribe at www.myeqmag.com/ mpn at an absolutely killer rate. As far as back issues go, there are no current plans to offer them as e-issues, though www.eqmag.com has all the content you may have missed out on over the past few years archived for your perusing pleasure. EMBRACING THE PARADIGM SHIFT I was reading the article “Music’s New Messiah’s: You!” [04/08], and I totally 6 EQ JUNE 2008 www.eqmag.com http://staging.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newbay/eq_200803/stage.php?startid=30 http://staging.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newbay/eq_200803/stage.php?startid=30 http://ww.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newbay/eq_200804 http://ww.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newbay/eq_200804 http://milkboyunlabel.com http://www.myeqmag.com/mpn http://www.myeqmag.com/mpn http://www.eqmag.com http://www.eqmag.com http://www.eqmag.com
