TONIGHT’S HOST “It’s important to twist a song slightly, and throw in a few piquant notes to catch people’s ears—it’s like throwing spice into a soup.” —Andy Summers, Guitar Player, June 2007 ANDY SUMMERS Andy Summers is world famous because he’s the guitarist for one of rock’s all-time biggest bands, the Police, but for those who adore the guitar, the story goes much deeper than pop-media fame. Andy fearlessly shunned obvious guitar-hero clichés, and by deconstructing rock, punk, jazz, blues, and classical music, he created a style that is not only immediately identifiable as his alone, but one that also transcends time, genre, and pop-culture trends. He explored sound design as something of a cinematic art, choosing to forge tones that didn’t just enhance his melodic and harmonic forays, but brought mystery, vibe, and emotion to very guitar part. For many players, hearing Andy’s clean, chorused, and echoing guitar spewing ear-opening chord inversions for the first time was like, well, walking on the moon. He is also an inventive composer (check out The X Tracks, First You Build A Cloud, or any of his solo albums), a film scorer (Down and Out in Beverly Hills), a photographer (I’ll Be Watching You: Inside the Police, 1980-83), and an engaging author (One Train Later, his autobiography, and Light Strings: Impressions of the Guitar with Ralph Gibson). In addition, Andy’s iconic, beat-to-crap ’61 Fender Telecaster—the machine that drove many of the Police hits—was recently honored with a replica edition by the Fender Custom Shop, and he was the cover artist of the June 2007 issue of Guitar Player. This is Andy’s debut appearance at Guitar Player’s Guitar Superstar competition.
