As he does in many DT tracks, Jordan plays his solo line with a dirty, searing synth sound, and makes great use of pitch bend and modulation controls. As you work on this solo, be sure to listen plenty to the original track to internalize Jordan’s phrasing; also, pay close attention to the pitch and mod indications on the transcription and try to incorporate them as musically as possible. Note that, without three hands, it’d be pretty hard to play this track in one take, as written — the bottom line is included for reference, to help place Jordan’s solo in context with the rapidly-shifting metric bed Dream Theater lays down. To help wrap your head around aspects of Jordan’s playing — and cultivate your own prog rock soling power — check out Andy LaVerne’s lessons on pages 40–42. 13 1/2 1/2 1/2 full () ( )( ) () () 5 4 5 4 () 12 8 12 8 14 8 14 8 “In the Presence of Enemies, Part 2,” words and music by John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, John Myung, Kevin Labrie, and Jordan Rudess. © 2007 WB Music Corp., YTSE Jams, Inc., WarnerTamerlane Publishing Corp. and Key Wiz Music.
