Keyboard Magazine - March 2008 - (Page 8) LINKS FROM THE EDITOR EVER MAKE A MOOG SOUND? Then please support the Bob Moog Foundation. What impact did Bob Moog have on your life? In my case, it was huge. Just to name one aspect, would there even be a Keyboard magazine to employ me had it not been for the community that sprang up due to Bob’s innovations? Maybe, but then again, maybe not. I’m sure many of you have even closer ties to Bob and his instruments than I. But what about those who didn’t have the chance to know Bob, be inspired by his ideas, or to get turned on by the sound of his synths? How can this music that we all love be furthered if no new enthusiasts and adherents are found? This is a challenge that the Bob Moog Foundation (www.moogfoundation.org) addresses head-on. Their mission: to celebrate, teach, and document innovative thinking in electronic music. Their initial objectives include the establishment of scholarships, funding an outreach program in schools, to support events centered around electronic music, and the creation of the Bob Moog Museum. But first, says Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Foundation and Bob’s daughter, “it’s going to require some serious funding. Our short-term goal is preserving Dad’s archives. We uncovered them about a year ago, in a metal shed where he worked for 25 years. Dad set aside his archives as a project to be attended to, but was always too busy working and designing new equipment (like the Voyager) to be able to focus on them. Another reason he set his archives aside in this modest environment was because he didn’t think of himself the way many people think of him, which is as a visionary. He was very humble.” Douglas Babb, Volunteer Curator, and Brian Kehew, of Moog Cookbook and Recording the Beatles fame, have been helping Michelle go through Bob’s papers and objects, completely at their own expense. So far, they’ve cataloged about 25 percent, and gotten just about everything into a climate-controlled environment. Bottom line: There are priceless schematics in this collection that the world has never seen, as well as countless documents and historically significant instruments. They all need restoration, preservation, digitizing, and professional archiving to varying degrees. Bob was much more interested in creating and communicating than he was in building a nest egg. Contrary to what many may think, there is no Moog fortune to help the Foundation begin its work, much less continue it. Craig Anderton said recently, “If everyone who ever sampled a Moog waveform gave just $10, the archives would easily be preserved.” I’d like to extend that to include everyone who ever made a Moog sound on any instrument — which probably covers almost every one of us in the Keyboard community. The benefit? “The reward is that everyone will have access to this incredible collection,” says Michelle. “Try to give commensurately with the impact Dad had on your life, and know that it will help us to give his legacy back to the community.” I’ve made plenty of Moog sounds, so I went to www.moogfoundation.org and made a donation. Please do the same. eyboard VOL. 34, NO. 3, #384 MARCH 2008 EDITOR IN CHIEF: Ernie Rideout MANAGING EDITOR: Debbie Greenberg TECHNICAL EDITOR: Steve Fortner ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Michael Gallant EDITORS AT LARGE: Craig Anderton, John Krogh DIRECTOR: Gaith Kawar MUSIC COPYIST: Elizabeth Ledgerwood PUBLISHER: John Pledger ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER & ADVERTISING DIRECTOR, NORTHEAST: Gary Ciocci gciocci@musicplayer.com, 603.924.9141 ADVERTISING DIRECTOR, NORTHWEST & NEW BUSINESS DEV.: Greg Sutton gsutton@musicplayer.com, 925.425.9967 ADVERTISING DIRECTOR, SOUTHWEST: Jon Levy jlevy@musicplayer.com, 818.994.3800 ADVERTISING DIRECTOR, MIDWEST: Jessica Sullivan jsullivan@musicplayer.com, 661.255.2719 ADVERTISING DIRECTOR, SOUTHEAST & NY: Grace Newman gnewman@musicplayer.com, 631.239.1460 SPECIALTY SALES ADVERTISING DIRECTOR: Mike Montgomery mmontgomery@musicplayer.com, 650.238.0307 SPECIALTY SALES ASSISTANT: Allison Smith asmith@musicplayer.com, 650.238.0296 MUSIC PLAYER NETWORK GROUP PUBLISHER/VP: John Pledger EDITORIAL DIRECTOR: Michael Molenda SENIOR FINANCIAL ANALYST: Bob Jenkins PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT MANAGER: Beatrice Kim GROUP PROJECT MANAGER: Lauren Gerber WEB DIRECTOR: Max Sidman WEB EDITOR: Lania Cortez MOTION GRAPHICS DESIGNER: Tim Tsuruda MARKETING DIRECTOR: Christen Pocock Mcfarland SALES AND MARKETING COORDINATOR: Molly Corman MARKETING DESIGNER: Joelle Katcher SYSTEMS ENGINEER: John Meneses ASSOCIATE CIRCULATION DIRECTOR: Cheri McElroy ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, SUBSCRIPTION MARKETING: Christopher Dyson FULLFILLMENT MANAGER: Rosario Perez NEWBAY MEDIA CORPORATE PRESIDENT & CEO: Steve Palm CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER: Paul Mastronardi VP WEB DEVELOPMENT: Joe Ferrick CIRCULATION DIRECTOR: Denise Robbins MARKETING DIRECTOR: Nancy Gregson HR MANAGER: Ray Vollmer IT DIRECTOR: Greg Topf CONTROLLER: Jack Liedke SUBSCRIPTION QUESTIONS? 800-289-9919 (in the U.S. only) 978-667-0364 keyboardmag@computerfulfillment.com Keyboard Magazine, Box 9158, Lowell, MA 01853 Publisher assumes no responsibility for return of unsolicited manuscripts, photos, or artwork. It may look like spare parts, but what Bob kept on hand was really nothing less than work in progress. When his family opened up his work shed after he passed away, they found a huge collection of instruments, papers, parts, and tools, much of it suffering from mold damage. And much of it of tremendous value to anyone interested in electronic music, which is where your support of the Bob Moog Foundation comes in. This photo, in fact, comes from the archive; these are the kind of artifacts that Michelle and her team are discovering amongst her father’s historic archives all the time.
