This year’s NAB Show includes a new program highlighting new trends and the creative thinking that's changing the industry. The Spotlight Series will feature experts from across the digital spectrum who will explore exciting new ways to deliver entertainment to viewers. Seven of Hollywood’s leading content creators and managers will share their thoughts on competing in the constantly evolving video broadcast entertainment business. “The Spotlight Series is new to the NAB Show and is part of an expanded focus on digital content,” said Dennis Wharton, NAB executive vice president, media relations. “Each keynote speaker brings a different perspective on creating, managing and distributing content.” The Spotlight Series runs Monday through Wednesday during show week. “We’ll hear from Barry Sonnenfeld, Anthony Zuiker, the “Lost” producers and Doug Liman on the creative side of the business and from Mark Shapiro and Jason Kilar on content commerce and distribution,” Wharton said. Sonnenfeld is executive producer and director of the popular ABC television show “Pushing Daisies.” He will share his insights into the status of filmed entertainment, his predictions for the future, and what viewing changes mean for filmmakers. Sonnenfeld, who also produced and directed “Men in Black,” “Men in Black II” and “Get Shorty,” is scheduled to speak on Tuesday, April 15, 2:30–3:30 p.m. Zuiker, creator and executive producer of the CBS show “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” has had no trouble getting viewers to tune in week after week. He’s found success in a mix of traditional television and evolving broadband opportunities. Zuiker will discuss taking risks to open up opportunities in television. He’ll stress the importance of targeting fresh content to young audiences and the roles of the Internet and mobile technology in enhancing a brand, luring new viewers and ultimately generating additional revenue. Zuiker will speak on Monday, April 14, 10:30–11:30 a.m. “Lost” executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof will reveal what goes into creating their distinct, massively popular ABC program, along with their ideas for delivering compelling content to increasingly mobile audiences. Cuse and Lindelof will be interviewed by Cynthia Littleton, “Variety” deputy editor of news development. The interview is scheduled for Tuesday, April 15, 9–10 a.m. Doug Liman, producer and director of “The Bourne Identity,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”and “Jumper,” is scheduled to deliver a keynote on Monday, April 14, from 5–6 p.m. Mark Shapiro, president and CEO, Six Flags Inc., is the former ESPN executive who led an unprecedented 30-month surge of ratings increases in his three years at the helm. Shapiro will share what he learned in television along with his current effort to bring 21 theme parks nationwide into the 21st century. His keynote will focus on how the two industries, although seemingly quite different, share similar goals in business that is constantly re-inventing itself. Shapiro will speak on Tuesday, April 15, from 5–6 p.m. Finally, Jason Kilar’s keynote will focus on business advantages when media is made available on consumers’ terms. Kilar is CEO of Hulu, an online video-ondemand service that has partnered with several leading content owners to offer movies, TV shows, and clips to viewers when and where they want to watch them. Kilar’s talk is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16. “These speakers are creating a lot of buzz and we’re excited to hear what they have to say,” Wharton said. “The series creates value for attendees who will get to hear firsthand from industry leaders who are reshaping the electronic media landscape across the four screens: film, television, Web and mobile.” Spotlight Series sessions are open to all conference registrants except One Day Packages.
