NABShow Daily News 2008 - (Page 12) By Jay Ankeny TV TECHNOLOGY NAB Show Daily News | PREVIEW Edition April 2008 DP Workshop Discusses Latest Innovations Intended for professional DPs as well as assistant camera operators, the Director of Photography Workshop will delve into the latest innovations such as tapeless acquisition using both solid-state memory and disk drives, the methods by which DPs can integrate their procedures into a collaborative workflow and essential digital production tips such as calibrating monitors for HD remote shoots. This year’s workshop has been expanded to three days — Friday, April 11, Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13 — because there is so much new information to cover. “Once again we are bringing in the best in the industry to talk about technology that is here and now,” said Gary Adcock, lead organizer of the event. “This will include 3D acquisition, high-speed digital photography, and even the new RED One camera.” “We’ll be discussing the new kinds of metadata that now includes lens information that can be gathered at the camera head, recent developments on the Arri D20, Thomson’s Viper and the new F-series Sony cameras,” Adcock said. “These innovations are changing the way that digital photographers relate to their equipment and the way their equipment interacts with the whole digital production chain.” Among a number of films scheduled during the workshop will be segments from the new “Speed Racer,” the Sci-Fi Channel’s “The Tin Man” and the “U2 3D”concert shot with the Cameron/Pace Fusion Camera. Sony has provided one of Package” presented by Kari Hess, which will be of interest to any camera person who needs to understand all of the different tools needed for today’s productions whether they are working in ENG, documentaries or high-end digital cinematography. This was one of the most popular sessions last year. Hess, sales manager at Fletcher Chicago, will be joined by Steve Fracol, owner of New Vision Pictures for the presentation. The organizers of this year’s DP Workshop have intentionally scheduled the event over the three days before the exhibits in the Las Vegas Convention Center open to emphasize its training content. Instead of having hands-on sessions during the workshop, organizers hope to arrange special morning and evening meetings with exhibitors on the LVCC floor during the show week to let attendees interact one-on-one with the equipment providers. This year’s DP Workshop experience will be enlightening for anyone in the business who needs to keep current with the top-of-the-line equipment available today. To cap off the weekend’s sessions, people attending the Director of Photography Workshop will be invited to attend Sunday evening’s Content Creators Party at the PURE Nightclub at Caesars Palace. Calrec provides a range of digital consoles in the Alpha, Sigma, Omega and Zeta consoles, alongside Hydra, a gigabit Ethernet audio networking product. Q. What’s new that you will exhibit at the NAB Show and what should broadcasters look for there? A. At the 2008 NAB Show, Calrec Audio will announce a major technology initiative developed in partnership with Ross Video Ltd. The collaboration allows remote control of fader modules on any Calrec console. On a basic level, this protocol enables a vision mixer to take control over the serial interface to autofades on the Calrec desk. In addition, the interface provides individual control of faders, cuts, and pfl of up to 192 faders on the Calrec console directly from the Ross OverDrive Automated Production Control (APC) Calrec console, saving time on site. The Offline Editor is especially useful for operators who are working to a tight schedule, such as freelance operators planning for a specific outside broadcast. The Offline Editor also enables the desk to be preconfigured while it is still in use — a practical feature for control rooms, which are subjected to constant use with fast turnaround between broadcasts. Q. How is your new product offering different from what’s available on the market? breaks outside the hours all the technicians are on hand. Calrec is in the forefront of providing interfacing to systems such as the OverDrive from Ross Video. Calrec’s versatile serial interfaces allows individual control of faders, fade rates, pfl and mixing of up to 192 faders on the Calrec console directly from the Ross Overdrive Automated Production Control (APC) System. This high level of integration enables the vision mixer or OverDrive system control of both audio and video on a given broadcast, minimizing staffing System. This high level of integration enables the control of both audio and video on a given broadcast from the vision switcher or OverDrive system, significantly reducing production costs.
