NABShow Daily News 2008 - (Page 24) 24 NAB Show Daily News | PREVIEW Edition April 2008 Podcasting for Rookies And Veterans By Paul Kaminski RADIO WORLD From podcast rookie to podcast veteran, attendees at this year’s Podcasting Summit at the NAB Show will find a program designed to teach basic concepts and procedures, as well as concepts designed to help podcast producers and managers make economic, operational and creative sense of the process. The sessions begin on April 11 with three-hour “boot camps” in which people new to audio and video podcasting can learn the basics of the process. In the video boot camp, Richard Harrington of RHEDPixel in Alexandria, Va., will share his insights on video podcasting. RSS feeds. Marketers and managers will benefit from sessions on measuring return on a podcasting investment; selling podcasting to advertising clients; how to leverage partnerships to build audience; and understanding podcasting metrics. The summit will have sessions on how a blog can support a podcast; how to direct a video podcast; and how to fine tune audio for the audience’s ears. Lawrence said the processing of audio is very important for a pleasing podcast. “In [over-the-air] radio, producers use audio elements, which can sound very dramatic in a car. In a podcast, those elements can sound too harsh, because listeners on iPods (for example) literally have the podcast ‘in their ears.’ We want to be gentle on the listener’s ears.” Harrington says “there is a wealth of things to learn at the NAB Show. An organization just needs to pick what matches them best. For example, the New Media conference falls immediately after the podcasting conference. We did that so content creators could attend both, and truly grasp the evolving market place. At the NAB Show, it’s about getting what you need, staying ahead of the curve, and networking. I think the Podcasting Summit and New Media conferences will offer this.” EXHIBITOR VIEWPOINT: AUDEMAT Richard Harrington Q. What’s new that you will exhibit at the 2008 NAB Show and that radio broadcasters should look for there? A. Our engineering team worked very hard and we have many new products and updates to show this year. We introduced last year at the NAB2007 our “Radio All In One” concept with the Digiplexer 214, which is an FM/HD audio processor with two or four bands of processing, a built-in RDS encoder and an embedded audio backup. At this [ “The conference really focuses on giving an organization what it needs to launch, maintain and grow a podcast.” —Richard Harrington ] receiver, it is definitely the fastest way for an engineer to measure the coverage of its stations. Our product line of FM Mobile metering equipment now includes three products and meets the needs of small-size radio station as well large broadcasters. We are also targeting a new market with our Navigator Modulation Analyzer, which is part of our new Test and Measurement product line. This product combines many features in one unit and offers an extremely Harrington’s company has produced over 3,000 video podcasts. He says conferences like the Podcasting Summit present “an opportunity for attendees to learn the essentials and get their questions answered by experts.” David Lawrence will be presenting the audio boot camp. Lawrence says that his audio presentation “is designed to get people from broadcast professional to podcast professional. I hope that in each session, [the attendees] come away with an ‘a-ha!’ moment; a gold nugget that changes the way they look at podcasting.” On April 12 and 13 the summit splits into breakout sessions, which focus on the operational processes, the financial and marketing applications, the creative challenges, and lessons learned from those who are podcasting today. Harrington says the summit strikes a “balance between technical skills and business sense. The conference really focuses on giving an organization what it needs to launch, maintain and grow a podcast. We’ve gathered the best names in the business and they offer a wealth of professional expertise.” Those interested in making the technical side of podcasting easier can attend sessions on advanced audio and video podcast encoding; outfitting a podcasting studio; and deconstructing Thoughts from Audemat Inc. Vice President for Business Development Christophe Poulain on measurement tools. year’s NAB Show, we are introducing the Digiplexer 246. Many features within a 3RU: two, four or six bands of processing for FM/HD, RDS encoder built-in, embedded audio backup, audio backup via TCP/IP, transmitter remote control capabilities and a 20W or 100 W FM exciter. A true Radio All In One, isn’t it? This product will also be sold under the Ecreso brand and called “NEXTFM.” We’ll also introduce our Relio Tx remote control with the new Scripteasy V2 software, the result of 18 months work based on Clear Channel specifications. Four hundred units were delivered to Clear Channel in February. This product should meet the needs of many U.S. broadcasters. We are also releasing the Version 1.5 of our Goldeneagle HD monitor. This new update brings new features focused mainly on AM analog monitoring plus the 1kHz RBW for our embedded spectrum analyzer. We are also showing a beta version of our DAB+/DMB metering equipment. Q. You’ve expanded your lineup of measurement tools a great deal in recent years. What do your measurement tools give a radio engineer that he or she can’t already do? A. If we talk about our mobile metering units with built-in GPS high-level of precision due to its fully digital hardware platform. Dedicated to FM signals, the Navigator MA includes a digital demodulator, a spectrum analyzer, an oscilloscope, a sine wave generator, distortion analyzer and much more. That is unique in the market. You would usually need three or four different pieces of equipment to achieve all those measurements. Broadcasters can use this powerful portable unit for commissioning, troubleshooting and maintenance of FM transmitters and broadcast equipment. Manufacturers of broadcast FM equipment are also potential customers since they can use this unit in their labs and production benches. No annual calibration is required because the hardware platform is fully digital. That’s the beauty of it. Concerning our monitoring range, the Goldeneagle HD has been very successful so far because it offers precise monitoring of both analog and digital signals, but also notifies the technical staff via e-mail or voice messages of any out-of-tolerance conditions. It is a smart mod monitor that brings innovative features such as automatic time alignment monitoring, automatic mask compliance monitoring and remote audio streaming. We also have clients using the Goldeneagle HD with the transmitter remote control option. One unit instead of two. PRODUCT SHOWCASE http://www.sonifex.co.uk
