It is well suited to serving as a fully networked audio playback control center, and it was designed with the needs of the broadcaster and professional audio market in mind. The DN-C640 is compatible with most standard audio data file formats including CD-DA (.cda), WAVE (.wav), MPEG-1/2 Layer III (.mp3), MPEG-1 Layer II (.mpg) and Windows Media Audio (.wma), allowing for up to 20 hours of MP3 or similar audio playback from a single CD, CD-R or CD-RW. Additionally, the unit reads these files directly from a data DVD with its greatly enhanced storage, thus increasing continuous single disc playback to nearly 6 days of uninterrupted audio. For producer Jordan Tarlow, ICON D-Control ES was part of a broader move to Pro Tools software. “I used another program for many years, and frankly I just got tired of staring at my screen — that’s not why I got into music,” Tarlow explains. A 15year veteran of national radio and TV spots, Tarlow’s newly built Malibu, California, facility also produces the immensely popular Martha Quinn Presents Gods of the Big ’80s show on Sirius satellite radio. Producer/mixer Brad Gilderman relied on Solid State Logic AWS 900+ consoles at Westlake Studios’ Production Rooms 1 and 2 to capture the golden tones of the weekly hopefuls for this year’s American Idol TV program. The AWS provides Gilderman with SSL SuperAnalogue sound and integrated control of Westlakes’ Pro Tools systems. The productions ended up on iTunes every week. MiniGobos are available in a variety of sizes and configurations to favor either isolation, bass trapping, or broadband absorption. MiniGobos are based on standard line of MiniTraps, MicroTraps, and MondoTraps, using hinges to join two or more panels together as a single unit that’s stable, easy to handle, and self-supporting. Further, the same panels can be used when recording, and again in the control room when mixing. For most gobo applications, RealTraps recommends the HF style MiniGobo, which is absorbent on both sides and has a barrier in the middle for increased isolation. However, RealTraps also builds MiniGobos with the reflective barrier on either side, or no barrier at all; with no barrier, the MiniGobo still provides plenty of isolation, and they’re also more effective as bass traps or reflection panels in the control room when mixing.
