To give energy and reality to these great “toys,” Hollywood sound recordists John Fasal and Eric Potter employed some high-end technology, using Sound Devices’ 744T field recorders and 442 and 302 field mixers to capture authentic sounds for the film. Under the direction of Sound Designer and AVASTOR SDX Portable Hard Disk Drives Avastor has introduced its new line of SDX portable hard disk drives. Targeting the prosumer market as well as the pro market, the SDX line is more priced lower than the highly popular HDX drive. The SDX line is available in three models: SDX 200 (USB 2.0 model), SDX 400 (dual FireWire 400/USB 2.0) and SDX 1000 (QUAD model: FireWire 400/800/eSATA/USB2.0), each with a choice of 80 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB or 1 TB capacities. eSATA technology offers 3 Gb/s performance in a single drive configuration for data-intensive applications including real-time video editing, digital photography and high-speed data back up. Every SDX hard disk drive is packaged in a compact, reusable box with a convenient carry handle and is backed by a comprehensive two-year warranty. This included the Batmobile, the BatPod (Batman’s new motorcycle), semi trucks, S.W.A.T. vans, armored trucks, as well as a series of the Joker’s automatic weapons, the sounds of which all contributed to the film’s intense and dynamic comic book feel. NKYO Corporation has announced that it will release its first Blu-ray Disc Player for the international market in late 2008. This player is designed to partner with Onkyo’s high-definition A/V receivers equipped with full HDMI processing of 1080p video and decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound formats. Onkyo was among the first home theater manufacturers to offer full audio and video processing capabilities for HD formats such as Blu-ray Disc. Universal Audio recently installed Focal Professional monitors (Solo6 Be + Sub6 Be) in their studio at their brand new corporate digs. Will Shanks, Universal Audio’s product manager uses the new studio on a daily basis; “Having the new studio is a Godsend,” he says. “While we did a lot of critical listening at our old facility, the room conditions were not exactly ideal — so, for ultra-critical listening and product sign-off, we would often rent studio time, usually in mastering rooms. The design engineers and product managers like myself spend a lot of time in our new room, as this is the best place to get hands and ears on prototype hardware and software.” NEUMANN TLM 67 Microphone Neumann’s TLM 67 microphone is based on the company’s “workhorse” of the 1960s, the U 67. Like the U 67, the TLM 67 incorporates the K 67 capsule. In addition, the new circuit design closely reproduces the sound characteristics of the U 67, without the use of tubes. According to the company, similar Neumann circuit technology has already proved itself in the TLM 49. The TLM 67 has three switchable directional characteristics (omnidirectional, cardioid and figure8), selectable 10 dB pre-attenuation, and high-pass filter permit detailed adjustments to be made depending upon the specific recording situation. Incorporated into Fairlight’s key products such as Constellation, Xynergi and Anthem CC-1 has placed the company at the forefront of “green” computing initiatives by providing an alternative processing platform that delivers increased performance with dramatically lower power consumption. In recent months, a number of key Fairlight customers have upgraded their facilities to incorporate CC-1, citing speed, improved workflow and reliability as the main reasons for their decision to upgrade. These include Westlake Village Studios in California, New York-based Penny Lane Studios (pictured is Bobby Sorrentino and Joseph Miuccio), and Back to God Ministries International in Chicago.
