While they don’t offer any rigging points, they are an economical solution to acoustic music or book-reading “coffee house” PA applications. Also, they would make a great fill speaker in a club or a bar. These boxes would also be good options for the starving musician needing an economical PA that doesn’t take up a lot of room. The speakers may be awkward to carry, but in most cases a pair is used at a time. Some creative use of plywood and the addition of the caveman’s favorite invention (the wheel) would most definitely help with the handling issue. These boxes are very economically priced, so owners of these speakers can pocket a few dollars to later spend on gas to get to and from shows. Five: Lastly, I wish that in determining rental pricing and value for audio equipment, sound companies could become more consistent. There is too much bottom feeding going on in the audio business to procure shows from promoters! You get what you pay for in terms of the quality of people and the gear you request. If a company meets my rider in gear but can only provide one technician because of the price they have given the promoter, the show usually suffers in terms of difficulty in show set up and the time constraints to meet sound check as well as staffing requirements to assist with potential problems that might be encountered while mixing a show. I would be interested in hearing comments from other FOH engineers and what might be on your wish list. Email me at TYSound1@aol.com Tom Young is lead engineer for Tony Bennett. A major difference between the Europe and Asia legs of the tour and North America dates is an inconsistency in venue geometry. “With an artist that sells between 5,000 and 15,000 seats,” Yakabuski says, “in North America you are going to be in some kind of basketball- or hockey-style venue. But in Europe or elsewhere, you never know what type of venue might accommodate that size audience. These venues are not always conducive to music concerts as far as acoustics and production, so they can be very tough to mix in. Also, power in Europe can be very inconsistent from venue to venue. The incoming voltage from day to day can vary quite a bit. We did take our LMG V-DOSC PA system to Europe so, with our KUDO side arrays as well as our V-DOSC mains, we had the flexibility to morph the system to cover the various shapes of the venues.” Mel Lambert, principal of Media&Marketing, a Los Angeles-based consulting service for the professional audio industry, has been intimately involved with production and broadcast industries on both sides of the Atlantic for more years than he cares to remember. 54 | ProAudio Review | June 2008 www.proaudioreview.com http://www.tascam.com http://www.samsontech.com http://www.sony.com/professional http://www.samsontech.com http://www.yamahasynth.com http://www.proaudioreview.com
