ProAudio Review - October 2008 - (Page 60) The latest news and products NEW PRODUCTS SOUNDCRAFT Si3 Digital Console To make its US debut at the 125th AES Convention, the Soundcraft Si3 is the first — and flagship model — of a new digital live sound console line. “It’s a totally integrated unit,” says Product Manager James Shears at the initial Si3 rollout at PLASA 2008 in London. “No racks — power supplies are built in, and audio ins and outs are on the back on physical XLRs.” The Si3 is conceived as a plug and play replacement for a conventional mid format analog console. “Effectively, take your analog one out,” says Shears, and “put your digital one in.” Shears says there won’t be “a half-fitted” Si3; the configuration is fixed, though ample for a broad range of applications, including the House of Worship market. The Si3 has 64 physical mic/line inputs, 24 buses and eight matrix outputs. Each bus output has a dedicated physical connection and metering. “You can assign those as groups or auxes, however you wish,” says Shears. “You want 24 groups, you’ve got 24 groups.” says Shears. Stay tuned to the pages of Pro Audio Review for more on the Si3. Given the Crowes’ longstanding reputation for playing loud, longtime Monitor Engineer Drew Consolvo and FOH Engineer Scott “Scoobie” Scherban were well equipped for the challenge, newly relying on Martin Audio LE2100 monitor wedges. Hip-hop festival Rock the Bells — featuring performances by Nas, Mos Def, De La Soul, Method Man, and A Tribe Called Quest with Black Eyed Peas (in LA) and Jay-Z (in NYC) — has been using two Yamaha PM5D digital audio consoles. “We have about 12 headlining acts on the same stage during the festival, so it is paramount for me to be able to store all the acts and pull them up on the fly,” states Billy Flores, sound crew chief and front of house engineer. With the exception of A Tribe Called Quest who is using a PM5000, all acts were mixed on PM5Ds at front of house and monitors. Limelight Presentation Systems have become the latest in a growing list of event production companies who are using Martin Audio Compact Line Array technology as the spearhead of their principle PA system. Head Of Audio Dave Plant recently placed an order for 16 W8LC’s with Redditch-based dealer, John Brown at Limit Audio. Now in the rear view mirror, PRG Audio provided the live sound reinforcement for NBC’s “Toyota Concert Series On TODAY airing ,” throughout Summer 2008 on the network’s “TODAY Show.” The south stage features a sound reinforcement system consisting of two ground-stacked line arrays, one per side, each containing seven JBL VERTEC VT4887ADP-AN powered compact line array loudspeakers. The north stage features two arrays of five VT4887ADP-AN loudspeakers per side. Each array is accompanied by a VT4881ADP-AN powered compact arrayable subwoofer.
