ProAudio Review - October 2008 - (Page 7) Letters RARELY SEEN, MUCH APPRECIATED Steve, Just wanted to thank you for something I rarely see these days: an informative article on a timely subject! Prosumer Portables in a Pro World [PAR September 2008] is most welcome and should be required reading for anyone interested in these devices (in my case, as a pro audio salesman and as a teacher). I didn't know that most of the level controls on these units are post-converter and I also didn't realize what abysmal dynamic range and S/N specs they have. Thanks for the valuable information … guess I'll be keeping my HHB PortaDat a little while longer. All Best, Lars Hoel OCTOBER 2008 RESPONSE FROM PAR CONTRIBUTOR STEVE MURPHY: Lars, Thanks for reading PAR and for the kind words! Yup, hang on to that HHB — in many respects it's got a leg up on the prosumer flash recorders and even some in the pro price range. As I intimated in the article, it's a shame that, while the good features are out there, they are scattered across the various models without any qualifying as exceptional. It would also be nice if the manufacturers were more upfront about things like lack of pre-converter level controls, etc. This was something I happened across and confirmed on my own; I have yet to see it mentioned in any manual. Don't get me started on 1/8-inch inputs again … Best, Steve STUDIO | LIVE | BROADCA ST | CONTRAC Genelec SE DSP Surround Monitoring System Prism Orpheus P14 ProAudio Review The Review Resource for Sound Professio nals TING | POST DIGITAL EDITION In This Issue !
