ProAudio Review - November 2008 - (Page 62) In park zones such as “Rock & Roll Heaven,” program audio is carefully synchronized with scheduled park events Electrosonic created for us, where we program in the times that a live performance will start. Depending on that performance, we will then schedule a mute on the playlist for an entire zone. After all, we want you to hear the live music and keep coming to it. If the playlist kept playing, you may not know that there is a live performance and won’t head in that direction. Each morning we set the times for the day, but other than that, the system is quite self sufficient.” In addition to being quite sophisticated in its programmability, the background music is quite complex in itself; ear candy at HRP abounds, to say the very least. “In some of the zones, you’ll hear a split mix,” describes Ian Prevell, technical manager of Entertainment Services. “In ‘Rock and Roll Heaven,’ for instance, you may hear the original version of a Guns ‘N Roses song on the right-hand side, but on the left-hand side on that side of the street, you’ll hear the reggae version of the song, synchronized in perfect time.” Daily, Ledford and Prevell do their rounds at the park to keep all 1,000 speakers operating. It’s not that there is a problem with the speakers themselves, assure Ledford; it’s just that there’s always some variable that will kick one or two off line. “With the park having so many speakers, there will always be speakers that go out,” he explains. “Nearly every day we have a call from a vendor somewhere in the park that a speaker may not be working. In those cases, we’ll go to the appropriate amp room, and — for instance — that speaker will have gone into clip mode. We also do our normal walk-through checks to see if the levels aren’t too hot, and so on.” Being at the beach, thunderstorms that seem to come from nowhere are a general rule rather than an exception. For that reason, HRP was well prepared for temporary power loss due to inclement weather. “If we lose power, we can have music playing for at least an hour and a half thanks to generators,” explains Ledford. “We may lose audio in gift shops, but the priorities — out in the park — will be covered during temporary power losses.” Live Rock At Hard Rock Further differentiating HRP from other theme parks is its daily live music performances.
