A Peavey Versarray delivers the sounds of “Hard Rock Live” musicians and bands, but none rock as hard as those at HRP, thanks to the caliber of the acts themselves and the sound reinforcement offered by the park. “Hard Rock Live” is HRP’s main stage, which is essentially a modern amphitheater (or “shed”) in the midst of the park. Over the past year, the stage has hosted such acts as the Eagles, Kid Rock, Parliament Funkadelic, 38 Special, and Charlie Daniels Band, among others. The flown LCR FOH rig features seven Peavey Versarray VR112 line-array enclosures and three VR218 subwoofers per side, and four VR112 elements and two VR218 subs in the center. For spillover coverage, two Peavey QW 2F loudspeakers frame a large LED screen. At front of house, a Midas XL 200 analog console is offered to all acts, as well as a load of outboard, including Ashly Audio parametric EQs, dbx compressors, BBE Sonic Maximixers, and TC Electronic digital effects and multiprocessors. The “Roadie Stunt Show” and “Malibu Beach Party” attractions—music-based acrobatic performances—also feature Versarray line arrays. Meanwhile, all three large stages offer Crest Audio amplification, mainly Pro 9200 for VR218 subwoofers and Pro 5200 for VR112 enclosures. Further, more live music is provided by HRP’s many small live stages throughout the park by local, regional, and other emerging acts. “We have tie-line channels to zone-based PA at each of these stages,” explains Ledford. “Bands can access the installed speakers that are already here, which temporarily disconnect from the park’s networked audio, so they can use the system within a zone. So, a given band can be heard on all the attractions for that zone. This way, a visiting band doesn’t have to bring in a PA—they just bring their personal gear and rock out. We provide anything else they may need—a main mixer and outboard processing, for example.” You Can’t Stop Rock ‘N’ Roll? Due to the current economic climate, HRP is in a state of fiscal reorganization as it comes to the end of its inaugural 2008 season; the $400M park is currently on the market. However, current park representatives feel confident that they will be providing entertainment to South Carolina’s “Grand Strand” for the 2009 season. For those that have yet to experience Hard Rock Park, let’s hope it finds the necessary light at the end of its financial tunnel. After all, it’s only rock ‘n’ roll—but I like it, yes I do.
