Containing eight mic preamps in a single rack space, the Model 188 represents an alternative to the company’s flagship remote preamp, the Model 1788A. Like the 1788A, the settings of the Model 188 may be remote controlled via Ethernet or MIDI, using Aphex’s 1788A-RC hardware remote or the 1788SW control software (PC and Mac) or via Pro Tools. Unlike the 1788A, the Model 188 does not have the extensive onboard metering, nor does it include MicLim technology, which limits the signal at the mic input. However, the 188’s 1U chassis targets it for mobile systems with space limitations, and it consumes less power than the 1788A. The Model 188 is also a complement to the company’s Anaconda digital snake system.
