Prosound News - April 2008 - (Page 27) [27] Criteria Gets Makeover its 50th anniversary, the Hit Factory Criteria (www.criteriastudios. com) has given a comprehensive upgrade to its key recording systems. The facility turned to GC Pro (www.gcpro.com), the outside sales division of Guitar Center. The Pro Tools systems in all five studios were upgraded to Pro Tools|HD5 with Apple 30-inch cinema displays. The upgrades also include five Digidesign EB7 expansion chassis and a dozen of Digidesign’s Massive Pack 6 plug-in bundles. In addition, the in-studio routing system was upgraded from PCI-X to PCIe, increasing throughput facility-wide. MIAMI, FL—Celebrating Mojo’s Working at NY Noise Studio by Christopher Walsh NEW YORK, NY—In the new professional recording landscape, a music recording studio can take many forms. In the trendy Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan, one facility is quietly serving many established—and some legendary—artists’ album projects, while maintaining the vibe of its traditional services and clientele. NY Noise, say owners Craig Bishop and Rick DePofi, has seen its traditional advertising sessions dwindle from nearly 100 percent to 20-25 percent of its activity. Fortunately, though, music production has leapt from an insignificant percentage to a strong majority. This sea change seems to suit them—and top producer David Kahne, who occupies a production studio on the premises—just fine. Advertising work has largely dried up, says Bishop, “because roughly 60 percent of advertising music is licensed songs now—actual masters, and to a lesser degree, re-records. That’s greatly affected the original music community. Also, there’s a whole new generation of both agency people—producers, creatives—as well as writers who are totally unfamiliar with the older system of formal music houses. As far as they know, all you need is a synth, Pro Tools and a bedroom and you’re in business. But it’s really the licensing of masters.” (continued on page 38) Marsh Penetrates HOLLYWOOD, CA—Stephen Marsh Mastering (www.stephenmarshmastering.com) recently hosted album mastering sessions with guitarist/producer Jesse Johnson (the Time) for his new album, Verbal Penetration, with chief engineer Stephen Marsh and assistant engineer Stephanie Villa. Other recent Marshmastered albums include the newest release from electrified resonator guitar monsters Eric Sardinas and Big Motor with producer/engineer Matt Gruber, Sardinas’ fourth release for Steve Vai’s Favored Nations Entertainment; and Hexes For Exes by Moving Units for producer/engineer John Travis and engineers Blake Miller and Mark Trombino. NY Noise principals Rick DePofi (left) and Craig Bishop have transitioned from recording primarily for advertising clients to predominantly music production. Parking Pianos OSSINING, NY—When the Yellowjackets and guitarist Mike Stern booked BiCoastal Recording for an album project, studio proprietor Hal Winer was naturally very pleased. When he learned that drummer Marcus Baylor would be setting up a huge kit—certainly by jazz standards—he knew he had a problem. The kit would not fit in BiCoastal’s iso room; nor does the studio’s 9-foot Steinway grand piano. Necessity, however, is the mother of invention, and Winer met the challenge in a most creative way. After conferring with Russ Berger, who designed the studio, Winer built a unique “piano garage” that enabled the Yellowjackets to record as an ensemble in BiCoastal’s tracking room. “When it’s a jazz ensemble, I usually put a drum kit in a small iso booth,” says Winer. “Marcus Baylor has an enormous kit, which I didn’t know: three snare drums, four or five toms, tons of cymbals. It wouldn’t fit, so I freaked. I thought I was going to lose the session. Then I decided it would be easier to put the piano in a box than the drums. I started playing around with designs on paper, and using some knowledge I had gained from Russ Berger through the building of the studio, I applied some of the same principals and built the garage.” The garage is simply a large, soundproof plywood box comprised of a frame, walls and a top. The components fit snugly together, effectively isolating the sound within from without. “The only thing that sticks out of the box is the keyboard,” says Winer, “so the player can be in the room with the rest of the players, but his instrument is completely isolated. It worked out very well—it saved the record.” (continued on page 40) April 2008 prosoundnews.com Communicate Better.
