TCB at NYC’s JSM by Steve Harvey NEW YORK, NY—As the record industry struggles to find a new business model suitable for the digital age, commercial music houses have emerged as one viable alternative for artists seeking new methods for exposure and remuneration. At JSM Music in Manhattan, musicians and composers have found a home on both sides of the studio glass, working on music for television during the day and gigging at night. “JSM is one of the biggest music houses in the U.S., dare I say, the world,” observes in-house composer/producer, Adam Elk. Joel Simon established the company in the early 1990s, Elk reports. “The way we’ve survived where others have perished— which is an understatement—is by doing television and radio, and not relying on the music business, which, as we know, is somewhat of a dinosaur.” JSM occupies two floors of a building on 19th Street at Sixth Avenue, encompassing 10 writers’ rooms and two Pro Tools-based mix studios, one featuring an SSL console, the other dedicated to mixing “in the box,” in an environment Billboard magazine has HPA Retreat Draws Crowd Hollywood Post Alliance’s 14th Annual HPA (www.hpaonline.com) Technology Retreat was the most successful ever, drawing a sold-out crowd to Rancho Mirage, CA. Engineer, historian and author Mark Schubin served as moderator and hosted the Technology Year-inReview. Special attention was paid to the industry’s rapid shift to data-centric modes of production and fully digital infrastructures. Generally, during the day, we all do TV. Every- one will have a commercial that hasn’t aired yet on their desktop, and they’ll be cutting to it, writing (continued on page 44) Nomad Takes Root NEW YORK, NY—Nomad Post recently completed a series of sound design and mix projects including the re-branding of the SPEED Network as well as promos, commercials and other work for Mercedes, MTV, BET Network, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Foxwoods Resort Casino and Verizon. An audio post facility situated within the Earth2Mars editorial house on Park Avenue South, Nomad comprises two 5.1-capable rooms identically configured around Yamaha DM2000VCM digital audio consoles. The audio shop was opened in August 2003 by the father and son team of Mike Levesque Sr. SonicPool Posts Some Projects HOLLYWOOD, CA—SonicPool (www.sonicpool.com) completed ADR for The Border, an action/drama series which airs on Canada’s CBC network. For client Spike TV, SonicPool provided the mix and HD online for the channel’s on-air TV promos publicizing its upcoming Star Wars marathon event. and Mike Levesque Jr. The impetus for opening Nomad came with the demise of the Tapehouse Companies, which included Photomag Sound, where Levesque Jr. was working at the time. “I gained invaluable experience working in that environment, and it gave me a strong foundation with which to build my career,” he says. The facility is outfitted to handle in-house and remote voiceover work, sound design and 5.1 mixing for radio, television and broadcast specials in addition to DVD projects, which have included long-form live music performance projects by the Pixies and Elvis Costello and the Imposters. In addition to the Yamaha digital desks, the rooms offer matching Pro Tools|HD systems, Genelec 5.1 monitoring, Avalon mic preamps with Sennheiser and Neumann microphones, TC Electronic DBMax and Dolby E processors, plus various digital tape-based recorders. Levesque Jr., a six-time TELLY Award winner, first got to use the DM2000 console while mixing The Blues: A Musical Journey for executive producer Martin Scorsese and producer/filmmaker Michael Borofsky. The PBS documentary series spawned a DVD box set and won two Grammy Awards for its CD soundtrack. But he first encountered Yamaha digital consoles almost 12 years ago, beginning with the DMC1000. “I appreciate the flexibility that digital has to offer over analog, especially the immediate total recall of all parameters and the available signal processing that the DM2000 offers. The feature which I find most useful is the flawless user interface with Pro Tools, the routing flexibility is awesome, the 5.1 monitoring makes the console a breeze to use, not to mention that it sounds great,” he shares. The elder Levesque maintains a home studio for his Mike Levesque Music LLC operation that is also based around a Yamaha DM2000. He composes music for a variety of large-scale corporate events and also works with two musical groups, The Rhythmics and Live Lab, staging percussion and dance (continued on page 44) April 2008 prosoundnews.com http://www.gcpro.com http://www.hpaonline.com http://www.sonicpool.com http://prosoundnews.com http://www.maudio.com http://www.maudio.com
