Prosound News - April 2008 - (Page 50) [50] specialreport Measuring (continued from page 47) that utilize the company’s metadata paradigm, the LM100 can simultaneously display the incoming dialnorm (dialog normalization) value of a Dolby Digital program, or any program within a Dolby E bitstream, for direct comparison to the actual measured value. Measurements are presented in a numerical format. The LM100 can also determine the unweighted peak and a range of other informa- tion about the signal. A remote application supports advanced loudness measurement, logging features and enhanced error reporting. A set of userdefinable alarms and monitoring functions can inform an operator of input loss, signal clipping, over-modulation (LM100-NTSC version), high or low signal levels, silence and incorrectly set dialnorm values. Long-established meter experts Dorrough Electronics (NAB booth N8211; www.dorrough.com) offer a 5.1 display of loudness meters. This display is intended to provide the operator with the loudness level Wohler Technologies’ Wohler Plus of each individual channel along with the compatibility (phase relationship) of the associated channels. With more and more programs produced in 5.1 for Digital Television, level control, inter-channel phase relationship and dialnorm become ever more important. The “dialog” or center channel includes an adjustable reference so that the operator is able to match the Dorrough meter reference to the required dialnorm level. RTW (NAB booth N3223; www.rtw.de) The Mark of a Lifetime Performance Guarantee Your Good Name Deserves Our Good Name. Your reputation. EtherCon CAT6 Ruggedized CAT 6 for demanding environments. announced that its integrated loudness display conforming to the ITU BS.1771 guideline as a standard feature in time for the NAB Show. The entry-level DigitalMonitor 10500 displays digital stereo audio signals per ITU BS.1771 on a TFT screen. The 6-channel SurroundMonitors 10600 and 10660-VID monitor digital multichannel and surround audio signals as well as stereo, and also include an integrated surround sound analyzer. The display can show two or six bargraphs for the individual channels, plus two further bargraphs for the summed loudness of the 5.1 or stereo channels and the result of integration over longer time spans. The flagship 8-channel SurroundMonitor 11900 and SurroundControl 31900 and 31960 give users even more display options. Three individual bargraphs show the summed loudness of all individual signals, the integrated value with a dynamic time window and the result of integration over the last seven days or more. These can be used in addition to or instead of the usual peak meter bargraphs. Other features include numerical loudness display and data logging with a chart recorder. TC Electronic (NAB booth N2536; www.tcelectronic.com) has started shipping the LM5 Loudness Radar Meter plugin for Pro Tools|HD. LM5 derives statistical information from the ITU-R BS.1770 standard to visualize instant loudness and loudness history. In radar view, LM5 displays real-time loudness (LU or LFS) and true-peak level along with loudness history on an angular, color-coded display. The true-peak level display even warns the operator when excessive peaks are at the risk of creating distortion in downstream equipment. LM5 enables easy and predictable level management across distribution and broadcast platforms with or without the use of metadata. In either case, the meter can help improve speech intelligibility and reduce level jumps on all platforms using AAC or Dolby AC3. Wohler Technologies’ (booth N1314; www.wohler.com) Wohler Plus line of audio products offers a radical new approach to processing and monitoring, providing a variety of DSP options so that each unit can be configured for the specific functions required by a broadcast facility. This flexibility eliminates the need for all-ornothing boxes, helping broadcasters to lower operational costs. The modular system features flexible inputs—16 channels or eight AES pairs— and outputs, alarms, monitoring and metering, along with multiple channel synchronizing and shuffling of channels for 5.1 or 7.1 signal confidence. Optional inputs include AES and multi-rate serial digital embedded audio with Dolby encoding. The rackmounting unit features a high-resolution TFT screen and onboard menu system for control, as well as Ethernet, RS232 and GPIO interfaces. —Steve Harvey R R psn April 2008 http://www.dorrough.com http://www.rtw.de http://www.tcelectronic.com http://www.wohler.com http://www.neutrikusa.com http://www.neutrikusa.com
