The show featured top local acts like Zoe, Kinky and Jaguares, along with international artists Thievery Corporation, The Mars Volta and Junkie XL. Latin American bands Calle 13 (Puerto Rico) and Fabulosos Cadillacs (Argentina) also appeared, with Fabulosos Cadillacs headlining the event. The festival’s Red Stage featured an EV X-Line system with two main hangs of 10 Xvls and two Xvlt per side, with low-end support via 12 ground-stacked Xsubs. The system was powered by P3000 amps and processed through a NetMax N8000 with FIR filters. The Black Stage also featured an X-Line system, with 14 Xvls and 2 Xvlt per side, with 16 ground-stacked Xsubs, all powered by TG7 amplifiers. EV’s FIR Drive enhanced the systems’ performance, adding FIR filters to the processing power of Serpro’s NetMax DSP/matrix controller and Tour Grade amps Even with more than 20 bands with different setups, engineers and FOH equipment, Serpro’s EV rig helped them manage every performance at Zero-Fest. with RCM-26 modules. Having two large stages and a steady stream of acts posed many production challenges. With the help of LAPS-II software, Serpro was able to predict how each stage would behave in relation to the oth- er. Italian sound designer Andrea Taglia specified and designed the system. Acoustically, the project posed some major challenges. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the building took 20 years to construct and, by completion, the function of the different rooms had changed. Originally intended to provide stunning acoustics for large orchestras, the Sala Santa Cecilia has been drafted into service as a multifunction concert/convention venue due to Rome’s lack of suitably sized halls. However, its acoustic design with orchestral use in mind leaves Sala Santa Cecilia with a 2.5/2.8 reverb—perfect for symphonic music but impossible in a multipurpose room. It was this dilemma that Taglia undertook when contacted by Sonus Audio Services of Rome, a specialist in audio rental and installation for classical music and theater, which commissioned him to design a no-compromise sound system to solve the problems. “We tested several solutions and agreed that the best was an approach based on several small loudspeakers, all under individual control so they could be switched on or off depending on audience presence,” Taglia says. Taglia’s design features a left/right system of two ARCS cabinets and a dual 18-inch SB subwoofer per side. A frontfill system of 8-inch L-Acoustics coaxial cabinets helps confine the sound image to musicians on stage, while single sections of the side balconies are covered by six 115XT HiQ coaxial enclosures. The balcony has a left/right system of two ARCS per side. The system is rigged in an array with 32 motors controlled via wireless remote. “I chose ARCS and 115XT HiQs for their tight and predictable pattern, which really helps to prevent any possible leak onto the hall’s extremely reflective surfaces,” Taglia explains. Since installation, the system has worked to cover events from seminars— where providing intelligible speech in a hall with 2.5/2.8 reverberation time is a real challenge—through to jazz, pop concerts and the new Rome Film Festival.
