ProSound News - December 2008 - (Page 22) studioshowcase It’s a Great City I by Christopher Walsh n this ever-changing world, and especially in this city, creation and destruction go hand in hand. New York has seen more than its share of studios arise and fall away, a victim of real estate booms, cyclical economies, the project studio revolution and other external forces. It is especially uplifting, then, to see a local commercial facility thrive and expand. Great City Productions, located in one of Manhattan’s creative hotspots—the Chelsea neighborhood—has recently completed a significant renovation and expansion, taking on an adjacent space to build the new Studio A, equipped with a Solid State Logic Duality console. The road to Great City wound through much of Manhattan: An early adopter, owner Britt Myers had built a mobile Pro Tools|HD rig, which was based at the nowdefunct Sound on Sound Recording and rented to studios around the city. Producer/engineer Michael Brauer was a frequent client, and Myers, accompanying the rig, worked on many of Brauer’s projects as a result. “I came to New York at a time when Pro Tools was new and scary for people,” Myers recalls, “and I was very familiar with it, self-taught and knew it inside and out. I was able to accelerate my development by leveraging that skill at a Great City Productions chief engineer Ian Stynes (left) and founder/chief engineer Britt Myers at the SSL Duality in Great City Productions’ Studio A JENNIFER JURGENS GREAT CITY PRODUCTIONS Studio Owner: Britt Myers vitalstats Room Design: Fran Manzella, FM Design Consoles: The new, Fran Manzella-designed Studio A at Great City Productions features a Solid State Logic Duality console Solid State Logic Duality (Studio A); Digidesign ICON ES 32 (Studio B); Digidesign ProControl (Studio C) DAWs: Pro Tools|HD3 Accel; Apogee Converters; (Studio A); Pro Tools|HD3 Accel; Digidesign 192 converters (Studios B & C); Ableton Live, Apple Logic Pro, Propellerhead Reason, Soundminer (all studios) time when people were kind of afraid of it. “Once Pro Tools became such a common thing to have in studios,” Myers adds, “it didn’t make sense to keep renting it out.” He sold the equipment to Right Track Recording (now Legacy Recording Studios) and built Great City, opening the doors in August 2003. Opening with a single room equipped with an 8-channel Digidesign ProControl, a few pieces of outboard gear and an iso booth, Myers weathered the first months by working with indie rock bands, one project leading to the next. “Early on,” says Myers, “it was about getting in on the ground floor and developing a band, hopeful that they take off or lead me to something that does.” After working on John Phillips’ last recordings, Phillips 66, with early mentor Harvey Goldberg—music mixer for the Late Show with David Letterman—artists he has since recorded, mixed and/or produced include Suzanne Vega, Mates of State, Robbers on High Street, the Essex Green, Dressy Bessy, Benzos and the King of France. “We worked on [Vega’s] last record and developed a relationship,” Myers explains. “It had started out simply, working with her on GarageBand, and evolved into a whole lot more. She worked on all of the songs for her last record here, and just recorded a vocal here for a Sparklehorse (continued on page 69) Monitoring: K&H 0300 (3), 0100 (2), 0800 subwoofer (Studios A & B); Genelec 1031a, Avocet monitoring system (Studio C) Outboard Equipment: Chandler TG1 (2), TG Channel MKII, Germanium compressor, Germanium EQ; Empirical Labs stereo Distressor w/ British Mod compressor (2); Pendulum Audio Quartet II (2); Neve 33609, 2254e; Universal Audio LA2A (3), 1176 (2), 6176; Manley Vari-Mu; API stereo bus compressor; Vintech X73; SPL Transient Designer; DW Fearn VT-1; Federal Army Corps vintage compressor; Thermionic Culture Culture Vulture; Solid State Logic XLogic preamp/EQ/compressor channel strip (2), XLogic VHD 4-channel preamp, SSL G384 bus compressor; Brent Averill 1073 Neve modeled mic pre/EQ; Yamaha SPX2000, Rev 7; Bricasti Model 7 (2); Eventide Eclipse; TC Electronic D2, Reverb 4000; Fulltone Tape Echo; Lexicon PCM 91; AKG BX10 Spring reverb; Echoplex Maestro EP3; Roland RE-201 prosoundnews.com December 2008 http://www.rbdg.com http://www.prosoundnews.com http://www.rbdg.com
