Founded in 1991, AECG comprises the Alan Ett Music Group, a music production, clearance and administration company; the Opus 1 Music library, one of the fastest-growing music library companies in the world; audio post-production facility Media City Sound; and NewDance, a branded entertainment company. To that roster Ett has now added a partnership with Japan’s Fuji TV to find the media giant new entertainment opportunities. “We’re looking at opening the doors to relationships that can bring business to our other companies.” says Alan Ett, CEO of AECG. “We’re looking at new relationships to get media to people in partnership with stakeholders— anybody who has a need to reach their audience. That used to be the domain of the broadcasters and the record distributors, but that model is dead.” To that end, Ett and new AECG president Peter Isacksen recently returned from Holland with an option on a TV property. “That brings audio post to MCS, music composition to Alan Ett Music Group and music licensing opportunities for Opus 1, plus worldwide admin opportunities for the admin company. We’re looking at those types of relationships that we can leverage across a variety of media in a variety of ways to reach a given demographic.” Ett has seen the writing on the wall: “What happened to the music industry, where they had their heads in the sand, is exactly what is going to happen to the video industry. As the pipe gets larger and becomes ubiquitous, we’re going to have the opportunity to feed Engineers at Media City Sound, incuding Sam Kaufmann (pictured), meet the challenges of reality TV post production around the clock. people what they want; instead of a push, it will be a pull.” Advertising no longer works the way it did so the problem is how to monetize that, he acknowledges. But distribution channels are beginning to identify their audience: “They can monetize that with the people who want to reach those demographics. At that point, we’re back to the old model.” The group continues to grow; Ett is also opening an office in London in partnership with the U.K.’s largest provider of film music. The new venture will be named AE2—”A” for Air-Edel Studios, acquired by Cutting Edge Group last year, and “E” for Ett. “Cutting Edge is in the business of investing in feature films and production in exchange for the ownership of the copyright for the soundtrack. They have a fantastic roster of composers, and they have the world-class studios,” says Ett. A Musical Shout Out NEW YORK, NY—Lower Elias Arts Adds Pandolfo NEW YORK, NY—Elias Arts (www.eliasarts.com) has expanded its multicultural division, Avenida Acceso, with the addition of its new creative director, composer and general manager, Mike Pandolfo. Based in New York, he will oversee the musical production and continued growth of Elias Arts’ Avenida Acceso Group. Manhattan’s Sugarbox Studios has undergone something of an evolution since opening several years ago. Initially supporting composer/songwriter Andrew Hollander’s film and music production work, the company added a new division, Shout It Out Loud Music (SIOLM), about a year ago to handle commercial music licensing, and has now taken on an A&R role with independent music artists. Francis Garcia, formerly head music supervisor and a composer at Elias Arts/NY, first brought the idea that became SIOLM to Hollander. While also maintain- ing a traditional role in commercial music with composers, “We also wanted to focus on the recording artist side of things,” says Garcia, a musician who cut his teeth touring with punk and indie bands. “One of the things we’re really interested in is not having this rigid creative model,” he continues. “We’re interested in crosspollinating how we approach creative on any given project. There are certain jobs where we’ll call on our straight-up ad music guys, or maybe it’s completely bandoriented. So we take more of an A&R approach. There are a lot of parallels in the way that we func- tion that are similar to the record label model.” Offering examples, Hollander says, “For certain films that I’ve scored in the last couple of years I’ll ask Francis if he knows any bands who could come in and perform. That’s happened a couple of times. This great band, White Rabbits, just did some stuff, and I just worked with a couple of guys from the New York Dolls on a movie.” The Perfect Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll, produced by Spike Lee and starring Peter Fonda and Lauren Holly, features songs co-written by Hollander with Steve Conte, a former guitarist with the New York Dolls, that are performed by a band in the movie. “I was fortunate to be able to go on-set and work with these old blues musicians like Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin and be an on-set arranger for a version of ‘Train Kept A-Rollin’ which was a musical highlight in my life,” says Hollander, whose film credits also include Waitress, starring Keri Russell, Serious Moonlight, starring Meg Ryan and The Photographer, featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal. Recent production work includes Dana Parish and Your Vegas. Hollander and Garcia are able to take a truly hands-on approach with the artists they work with—they recently signed a dozen acts from across the (continued on page 38) prosoundnews.com December 2008 http://www.euphonix.com http://www.fairlightau.com http://www.lastudios.com http://www.eliasarts.com http://www.prosoundnews.com
