Yes, We Can Hear Obama CHICAGO, IL—It’s estimated that a quarter-million people turned out for Barack Obama’s election night rally in Grant Park, and that number doesn’t include those forming the press pool, an immense and truly global group representing news organizations ranging all the way from Al Jazeera to NBC, CNN and C-SPAN. With the media, of course, came a legion of wireless components including microphones, cameras, interruptible foldback (IFB) systems, microwave trans- King Crimson Knights Meyer its recent tour, King Crimson heard Meyer (www.meyersound.com) UM-1Ps and legacy PSM-2s used for foldback, mixed on a Midas XL8 by Ian Bond. This past summer’s Disney Music Block Party Tour was one of those cases, sporting a multi-act lineup aimed at under-10s and their parents; colorful, portable outdoor venues that featured lots to do; and on the technical side of things, sound supplied by Maryland Sound International. Yet the tour had troubles from before it even hit the road; EAST MEADOW, NY—Disney Martin Comes Alive ST. Adding to the issues, the lead singer of headline act, Barenaked Ladies, was arrested weeks before the tour and the band soon voluntarily dropped out. Taking its place on the bill was They Might Be Giants, which headlined a roster that included Ralph’s World, Imagination Movers, Dan Zanes & Friends, Choo Choo Soul and special guest host Raven-Symone in select cities. Nonetheless, when the dust settled, three weeks of the 23-date, month- long tour were cancelled, with only the final shows on Long Island, NY left as a standalone event. The families that turned up on those final days, however, were treated to a rousing show full of sing-a-longs and good cheer. Additionally, there was a mist tunnel to keep kids (and their parents’ tempers) cool; quality instruments in the NAMM’s Wanna Play? Musical Instrument area tent that kids could try to their hearts’ content; activity zones where kids tried out toys in Playskool’s Play Experience area; and if all that failed to keep a three-year-old’s interest, well, there were sandboxes and tubs of free Play-Doh, too. Most eyes were focused on the stage, however, and while the sound was clear and present, it was never loud, and that was by design, according to front-ofhouse engineer Tommy Sterling. Ensuring that the adults were “rocked” while remaining bearable for tiny, young ears, the bands were reproduced at reasonable levels. “It’s definitely a concern for (continued on page 63) December 2008 prosoundnews.com http://www.adamsonproaudio.com http://www.adamsonproaudio.com http://www.wcsl.org http://www.jblpro.com http://www.jblpro.com http://www.mccauley.com http://www.meyersound.com http://www.martin-audio.com http://www.martin-audio.com http://www.midasconsoles.com http://www.prosoundnews.com http://www.ultimateears.com http://www.ultimateears.com
