ProSound News - December 2008 - (Page 69) [69] Great City (continued from page 22) track produced by Danger Mouse. “But gradually I thought I’d transition to doing more post-production work,” says Myers, who added post services four years ago. “We do about 50/50 in terms of music and post.” Engineer, sound designer and composer Ian Stynes joined Great City in 2007, he adds, bringing a wealth of film mixing and post-production experience. In Great City’s expansion, an office was converted to a writing/production room, Studio C; the ProControl was moved into it, and a Digidesign ICON ES 32 was installed in its place, in what is now Studio B. “The way the industry has changed,” Myers explains, “it makes sense to be involved in a wider range of projects. We’ve done a couple of films here, and a television series for Cartoon Network/Adult Swim called, Superjail. We do a lot of promos for MTV and Spike, and have worked with Comedy Central. So we do a lot of post-production work, and the music work keeps coming. In the spring, we did overdubs and mixed a Broadway cast recording called, Passing Strange. [Now,] we’re doing a mix for a Spike Lee film, the musical version of Passing Strange. It was shot on the stage over a couple days, and plays like the ultimate concert DVD. We’re mixing in surround on the Duality.” The new, Duality-equipped Studio A, as well as Studio B, feature identical Klein + Hummmel surround-sound monitor arrays. “I love K+H speakers,” Myers enthuses. “We have 0300s for the front, and 0100s in the rear, just because there’s less information in the rear and having a smaller speaker makes sense for a smaller environment. But the 0300s are fantastic. Harvey turned me on to them—he uses them on Letterman. There’s something so real about them. I just find that I have to do a lot less work to get something that translates everywhere really well. Even if it’s a little bassy or a little bright, it still sounds good everywhere, and is easy to tweak from there. The core of it, for some reason, translates so well on those speakers.” At 2,800 cubic feet, Studio A works for diverse projects and fits within the confines of Manhattan’s commercial and residential spaces. “Just about the right size for getting a good drum ON THE EQUATOR: At the 125th AES Convention, Ted Keffalo, president and CEO of Equator Audio Research, presided at a demonstration for the company’s Q-Series monitors, which feature a Zero Point Reference coaxial design and DSP technology that help engineers ensure the room is optimized for accurate monitoring. sound,” Myers observes. “As always in New York, we’re limited by space, but it’s the right type of room for the wide variety of projects we do.” Great City Productions, he adds, “is 2,000 square feet altogether. We definitely use every last square inch of it.” That space has a remarkably high concentration of high-end equipment, from the Duality, ICON and Klein + Hummels to the vintage guitars, keyboards and amplifiers found throughout. Yet Great City retains an open, homey and comfortable vibe akin to a high-end post-production facility, one that hosts bands and solo artists as well as television and film projects. “From the client service aspects,” Myers summarizes, “we’re really geared towards a post-production facility and making it really nice and comfortable. When clients come here, it’s like they’re on vacation. For bands, it’s a welcome change. I’m able to provide that, because we do a diverse amount of work. Now we have three rooms, so we can put through a lot more volume than before, but also, because it’s a small place, still maintain the attention that is required for every project.” Great City Productions www.greatcityprod.com prosoundnews.com December 2008 ADVERTISEMENT productspotlight Bravo XR CD/DVD Disc Publisher Primera’s Bravo XR Disc Publisher is the world’s only automated CD/DVD duplication system that is rack-mountable.
