Tech & Learning - June 2008 - (Page 11) Students Open to elementary school, middle school, and high school students everywhere, the Earth Day Challenge provides a platform for this generation to discover the power of their opinions on current issues, articulate their concerns in video, and share their ideas with others around the world. Summer 2008 Starting in summer 2008, special Mobile Learning Institute (MLI) Earth Day Challenge camps across the country will help students create these videos – which can be public service announcements, documentaries, or any other genre – with the guidance of teachers and curriculum from the Pearson Foundation. How to Join the Challenge: Elementary school, middle school, and high school students anywhere as a part of a school or district organization, club, or class can submit. Entries must be submitted through an MLI Earth Day Challenge camp or with the support of a teacher/advisor or other adult school/district staff member. Visit the Earth Day Challenge web site for information about getting schools involved in the program, the participant package, using the Activity Guides, and other information for students about joining the challenge and submitting their videos. http://www.earthdaychallenge.org School Year 2008-2009 During the school year, teachers will be able to use the video-based Activity Guides in their classrooms. And the continuing Earth Day Challenge offers their students the chance to learn, create, and share. By learning more about the local and global forces that are shaping our environment today, young people naturally turn from reflection to action on these issues that matter to all of us. About the Digital Arts Alliance The Digital Arts Alliance (DAA) is a consortium that promotes digital arts in K–12 education through fully funded and staffed programs delivered directly to schools and community centers nationwide. Founded in 2005 by the Pearson Foundation, the DAA is a unique collection of corporations and nonprofits, each of which teams up with the Pearson Foundation to provide a digital-arts-focused program for a specific group of teachers and students. Together, these partners have served more than 15,000 teachers and students, delivering digital-arts programs to middle schools, high schools, and community centers across the United States.
