We spend the last couple of weeks taking care of our students by making sure that they have all their files throughout the year burned to CDs and DVDs. But we need to be thinking about our own data and how we are going to store it over the summer as well. We tell students all the time to “back up your data!” but are we not calling the kettle black? ALL THE WORLD IS A STAGE by Bob Sprankle Thanks to the Internet, students are able to get constructive criticism from a multitude of audiences. We’ve heard it time and time again that using tools like blogs or podcasts drives students to work harder and to challenge themselves because the whole world might be listening or reading their work. It is a much more enduring and difficult task to write for an unknown global audience than it is to write for an audience of one, the classroom teacher. I believe that as teachers we have the duty to open up our classrooms to a larger audience in order to provide our students opportunities for many voices of feedback rather than limiting them to the one that we can provide. DIY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT by Wesley Fryer Here are ten different options teachers could pursue this summer for digitally powered professional development. These options are: 1. Join a local (state) online learning community. 2. Learn about wikis and create one. 3. Create and share digital stories with VoiceThread. 4. Start using social bookmarking. 5. Join an online professional learning community like Classroom 2.0, and attend the 2007 K-12 Online Conference. 6. Share photos with family and friends on Flickr. 7. Watch and share outstanding videos online. 8. Videoconference with family and friends using Skype or iChat. 9. Create and read a customized digital newspaper. (With Google Reader.) 10.
