Tech & Learning - August 2008 - (Page 38) NECC2008/WHAT’S NEW MORE FOR THE CLASSROOM Busy teachers need products that help them easily create dynamic lessons. New tech tools make this happen. Follett Digital Resources unveiled the Follett Digital Classroom, an instructional content delivery system (www.fdr.follett.com) that helps teachers share resources and best practices. The interface gives teachers a simple portal for sharing content, creating assignments, and exchanging information with peers, parents, and students. Teachers can create lesson plans in advance and save them for re-use in the future. The new Wimba Classroom 5.2 software (www.wimba.com/k-12) includes “Presenter-on-the-Fly, which lets students lead discussions, presentations, and demonstrations. The Usage Insight gives administrators a quick view of attendance, duration, and participation. The Analytics API tool shows how virtual classrooms are being used by students, including how frequently students log in and how often they speak and raise their hands. Dell is enhancing its Dell TechKnow program that combines technology training in the classroom with hands-on experience troubleshooting and resolving common IT problems. Students participating in the enhanced Dell TechKnow program will gain skills such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication and collaboration, and technology operation and concepts. The Education Development Center (EDC) has collaborated with Curriki (www.curriki.org) an online community for creating and sharing open source K-12 curricula, to provide teachers with curricula. Curriki has made available EDC’s standards-based middle-grades algebra course, allowing teachers to not only access the free curricula, but to add to it or adapt it for use in their classrooms. Science students can build and program real robots using the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT (mindstorms.lego.com) robotics toolset. To complement this program, Vernier (www.vernier.com) is releasing a NXT Sensor Adapter that lets users link Vernier probes to the robots. There are over 30 Vernier sensors to measure everything from temperature, force, light level, UV level, pH, and more. $39 each. 38 | TECH & LEARNING http://www.fdr.follett.com http://www.wimba.com/k-12 http://www.curriki.org http://www.curriki.org http://mindstorms.lego.com http://www.vernier.com
